I need to renew my license, so I went to the dmv website to see what I need to do. Looked at a sample test, and holy crap. This is the kind of stuff you need to know? Wow.

What the Hell?

I didn't take a test when I renewed mine a few years ago. Is this new?

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

From DMV's webpage on renewal....

"Requirements:

The vision and traffic sign recognition tests are always required for a license renewal. The road test requirement is at the discretion of the Examiner. "

No mention of written test. I had to take one when I moved here in 2005--may only be for first-timers

Yes, when you get your permit, you take a written test (I failed and argued semantics with the DMV lady.....not recommended FYI). When you get your full license you just take a driving test.

But like I said, when I got a regular renewal, I just did a few forms, looked at some signs, picked a background and I was done. This was 2008.

Wait...you failed a test? ANY test??? {picks jaw up off ground}

I've found that four public empolyees one should never argue with are (and are most likely to encounter)
DMV
Post Office
TSA
Police

They can and will ruin your day, sometimes just out of spite.

OK, so based on this it's no longer even necessary to know the rules of the road, so long as you know statistics, the points system, and when you're most likely to lose your license. No wonder so many people drive like crap now.

i think they should add.

"If your throttle gets stuck in the open position what should you do?"

I. Push the gear selector into the neutral position.
II. Call your attorney on the cell phone before to see if they know how to stop the car.

For all the toyota drivers out there who buy cars based on consumer reports.

When I came to NC and took the test my wife studied the manual, I just winged it. She passed with flying colors. Me.....well, the examiner started writing a bunch of red on it and then asked me to clarify one of my answers, I did and she asked me again. I then got it and remembered a step that I had forgotten to account for. whew, passed by 1 question

When I moved to NC I went over to the DL office in Cary to get my NC license expecting that it was just a "show ID and receive new ID" ordeal. I was a bit surprised when I was told to sit down and take a test. I think I passed it by 2 or 3 questions. Got just about every question that wasn't about actual driving wrong.

Judging from the sample test, driving has nothing to do with it. I think the test is more designed for legal aspects such as the cops and the judge.
