I will add, that I understand having people show up to work on the bus is a problem. Having organized several things like this thru work I understand the frustration. If I am given 2-3 week heads up I will absolutely make the drive from the beach to work a day or a weekend if needed on the bus. I would be more than glad to.

Backing is a problem with the toad but so is the overhang on the buses that are suitable for the timing and scoring equipment. Apparently the swaying all over the road is not just a problem with the THSCC bus, but with all long tailed vehicles that tow heavy trailers.
I understand you see it as a bad band aid, I see it as an alternative that I have seen in operation and it works. As far as licensing that would have to be clarified, but again maybe Virginia law sees it as a hitch. Maybe NC would see it that way also, who knows??

I think you're making sweeping generalizations about the bus situation. Just because the current situation isn't good doesn't mean all of them suck, either. Changing that ratio significantly along with a heavier and stronger chassis *will* help. You apparently don't think it will help much, others disagree. Not much we can do about that.

As for the legality of the thing, there's no way to *know* without buying one, I'd bet. You might be able to take some GOOD pictures of one to the DMV and get an opinion, but you need to go to a driver's license office, not a tag office, where you can get an actual officer. And even then there's a good chance they might refer you to "Raleigh", but I'd say there's a better than average chance your outcome won't be good, given my dealings on matters like this so far. Once you start asking, they're very conservative.

And, IMHO, in a CLUB setting, we should be asking on ambiguous matters. If someone wants to take that kind of chance on their own, fine. But it would be too cavalier to not ask given what we know and expect random folks to hop in and drive a couple counties away.

And you didn't address the difficulties that backing this thing WILL cause at some point. You're trying to push a rope up hill...

The one thing we shouldn't do is "invest" in another bus without researching it more fully. I don't pretend to have the answer, but in this and other posts we have opinions on short overhangs, long overhangs, equalizing hitches, trailer lengths, toads, frogs, amphibians, and other "solutions". Before the Toad is considered as an option, we should verify that it is legal in NC and surrounding states. It is one thing to be comfortable that it might pass muster if it is yours, quite another to be volunteering to drive only to be pulled over by the State Police. Before we concentrate on another bus, we probably should consider other options, like vans, box trucks etc that can be A/C'd but are made to tow and might be had less expensively.

How about this? Cut a window in it and it doubles as a way to get the bus driver's car to the event. They pull the trailer with one car and drive the other car up the ramps

I watched him drive it up but had phone at the ready in case it turned into a Youtube moment.

Just a thought. The old bus was not that bad to drive at city speeds, but it was a handful at 70mph on I95.

I don't think those ramps are quite long enough.

*Not* that I'm saying you should get a box truck, but if that's what folks want, the U-Haul trucks have the lowest floor height, and on the ones with rear air suspension, you can put a dump valve on the air bags to lower it even further for loading stuff in the rear.

The older big U-Hauls are 7.3L non-turbo, which is no power improvement over the existing bus, but they do have deeper rear axle gearing. You could add a turbo kit if you really needed more power.

I have a friend in Wake Forest who built a 26-ft U-haul into an RV, and carried his 4x4 inside the rear door. He could do all that with no trailer needed. There are several build like that on 4x4 and "expedition" forums.

How about a trailer similar to what the food vendors use. Closed windows that slide on either side, good a/c, and power built in with a generator mounted under the flooring.

Than have a box truck for the heavy hauling.

Unless you've already got info on it, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Cost on those things is WAY above what we are willing to spend, and it's outside the current "format" we're looking for.

Kendt, you did get that we are looking for something with LESS overhang right? That one looks way cantilevered!

Yeah - but it is so big, that probably doesn't matter. Nevermind - nothing to see here, move along :)

So, what is the format the club is looking for? I'm sure that's decided and isn't up for debate, but it would be nice to know for those of us who keep their eyes peeled for such things.

V10 or Diesel, E450 based, longer wheel base version of what we have.

All will have some amount of rear overhang, but the longer wheelbase versions also significantly improve the ratio of wheelbase to overhang.

I would assume were we to get another diesel (I think we should) we'd want a turbo diesel right?

Yes, anything newer than what we currently have would be Turbo Diesel - ours was the last year of the non-Turbo's. However, note that the PowersStrokes in the vans were NOT intercooled, so only make incrementally more power than what our current non-Turbo provides. The V10's are actually pretty competitive, which is why they are not off the table.

How much does the current trailer weigh fully loaded? Bryan and I would tow his C6 with his Excursion V10 (2000 MY). Fully loaded with his aluminum open trailer it was around 4400#. It towed it fine but mileage wasn't friendly. - AB
