First question my wife asked me was if her old phone from her parents account was a smart phone and if it was a primary or secondary line on her parents family share plan.

She said that "if" her phone was a non smart phone, she absolutely could request the "transfer of liability" form, upgrade to the Droid X promotion without any problems.

She said if the person helping you couldn't "help", see a manager or try another store as who you were dealing with isn't giving accurate information.
Her old line was 8 months from an upgrade though :(.

She said that would be next to impossible to get around because of that. If a rep were to get you to start up a new account, then do the transfer of liability then port the number to the new phone. It would look like a odd credit called a false churn to the old line and it goes against their performance evaluation, thus reps won't do it.

But what does she say about this probationary period that an internal number goes through before it can be released after the line was canceled, that's the part I think is wrong.

Probationary period isn't that long she said, more like up to 90 days then back into the pool, but you wouldn't be able to get that number ever again.

She told me to get you to find out if the other two phones on the account are upgrade eligible or the primary is within 12 months you could do an early upgrade then transfer #'s back and forth once activated.

And yes, I agree, frustrating confusing shit

Vk, what about setting up a home line, and if your cell is out of range, off, whatever it will be forwarded to the second home line. I know it's probably not exactly what you want, but maybe an option.

Vk, give you and excuse to jump in the new GT and blast down the road to get better reception when you get a call. Problem solved.

Yeah, I put a really nice booster system in for Verizon before I went to ATT. It sucked. Definitely helped me get *some* signal, but not nearly as usable as the microcell from ATT.

Also note the other limitation of the ATT microcell...you can only program in up to 10 ATT numbers at a time that can be used with it. So it's not something that just any ATT customer within range can use. They also have to be using a 3G capable phone (my Dad still uses an old Edge RAZR, so his phone won't work with it at all). Those limitations are all different on the broadband-based devices from other carriers, though, so check into the specifics for those before you buy something.

It's less exciting than that. They just need the super high precision clock from the GPS satellites. It's pretty common for telco gear to need timing that sources from GPS or cellular (which comes from GPS).

Donnie, how many microcells do you have your place? With a really usable range of about 40 feet in each direction, I expect you have more than 1 :) - AB

We had Verizon for a long time. Were very happy with them. When AT&T bought them out we had problems. AT&T is unimpressive. So when my contract ended I went with T-Mobile and got a shiny new Samsung Vibrant (droid). The phone/device is cool as hell. I like it. T-Mobile leaves a lot to be desired. If it doesn't improve a lot I will dump them when my contract expires. They have good customer service. All the people I have dealt with are polite and get things done. Their service, the phone line, 3G, etc... isn't very good. Surfing the web or doing anything that makes the phone into a web browser, email, chat, isn't that good. I'm still texting via phone numbers instead of using Yahoo or other IMs.

So just be careful if you get all hell bent to switch carriers like I did. It could be worse. Ann is happy cause she hates AT&T and could care less about the techno tricks you can do with the phone. I got the droid cause it's a cool toy and makes phone calls. The phone part actually sucks.

Graham,

Did you mean to say "AT&T bought out Verizon"? :? I hadn't heard that.

For what it may be worth, the latest Consumer Reports cell phone report shows Verizon still at the top (i.e. fewer problems overall) and AT&T at the bottom (worst).

Absolutely not true for the ATT ones. If they are not in the right vicinity of the address on the account they WILL NOT WORK. BTDT. Had to do some annoying stuff with one, too, because their idea of where one of my addresses was physically was NOT correct. Besides, they don't need any higher precision timing than one can get via the broadband connection (which can get pretty darned accurate in itself).

I only need one in my house, but probably can't really talk just anywhere on it. But it works just well enough that's all I need. I think I have five or six total among different buildings and one vacation house, though.

I was confused about this too. I know ATT has bought Alltel and Cingular, but Verizon is still it's own thing.

Sorry my bad guys. It was Alltel and we liked them. Now they are AT&T we don't. We used to have Verizon a while back. Never really had problems with them. Other than their prices were high.

He's old and can't remember stuff :P

Verizon bought Alltel. You liked AllTEl, you like Verizon except you had to pay for the service coverage and they owuldn't negotiate. You don't like T-mobile as much because their coverage area is limited.
