The video's right that people will buy them anyway. Just think. A whole new legion of people putting '///1M' in their forum signatures! Extra points for changing the color of the slashes.

So in the *35 they went from biturbo to single on the N54. What is the turbo count on the 1M? I bet it is 2. Bimmer went back to a single turbo so 1M owners feel like they have something "better" than the regular 135/335 owners ;).

I guess the N54 is the one with the turbos? Does it really break as much as that video says?

Pretty much, yeah. The crazy part is they are on I think the 5th re-do of the fuel pump, and people have been stranded by it too. The new single turbo N55 is also in that group with failures on 2010, 2011 also: http://bmwcca.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8603

Ah so they renamed the engine in the *35 to N55 when they went to single turbo? Were there any actual block/head/intake differences compared to the N54?

That link is terrible. How does mazda and vw do direct injection so well and Bimmer can't figure it out.

The N55 is a Valvetronic design (only the N52 used Valvetronic in their 6-cyl engines prior), block should be same/similar, I'm sure the intake and exhaust designs are a bit different.

When we ordered the E90 330i as my wife's DD, we talked about waiting 8 months for the then rumored 335i, but her then current one was dead/sold, so we just bought it figuring we'd sell it after a year or two.

Interestingly, in 36 years of driving, this N52 powered E90 has been the most reliable car I've ever owned. It's at 80k miles now and almost 5 years and amazingly trouble-free. It only had one warranty claim before the factory warranty ran out, and one afterward (which BMW good-willed, it was a door lock actuator). Knock-on-wood that is...

It's only got 255hp, but all naturally aspirated, so it's a classic high-revving inline 6. If it only came with an LSD...

they do have their issues which should be solved with the latest recall (released to us 4 days ago) it includes a revised hdp, low pressure fuel sensor and injectors. the faulty injectors were due to a manufacturing defect that affected half the injectors built before a certain date. i have not yet heard what the cause of the failing hdp is, we were told they were told at first it was a problem with the suppliers they changed suppliers and a couple different part numbers have come out each time the number of cars with issues seems to go down.

the N54 and N55 are different engines, to the average person they might look the same but there are distinct differences that go much deeper than just switching from twin turbo to a single or "twin power turbo" as BMW calls it.

despite all this they are amazing engines and despite the fact that the 3 series has become quite the fat pig the N54 makes it a hell of a lot of fun to drive. i will own one one day, when the second hand prices are much lower. it will probably a 335 because of availability but i would prefer the 1 series because the size is a whole lot more appealing to me.

Sean, what are some of the differences between the N54 and N55 other than the turbo(s) and probably the exhaust manifold due to the turbo changes.

This video made me chuckle. It's hard to tell if he is being serious when he describes all the things an M car requires.

Looks like 1M is classified into A-stock along with Evora and Boss 302. At least that seems to be implied by this thread: http://www.sccaforums.com/forums/forumid/19/threadid/402409/scope/posts

However, I'm not too good on finding stuff on this from the SCCA. I looked through their fastrack news for the past couple of months, but can't find any mention of these. Sigh...

AS per:

http://www.scca.com/documents/Fastrack/ ... ck-may.pdf

See Solo Tech Bulletins starting at the bottom of page 16.

FYI the 2011 and 2012 V6 Mustangs are now in DS instead of FS
