given that a Lotus is HP over chassis weight vehicle Dick, i would suggest you take your fair bride ah-Vette shopping. a C7 'vert with 436hp is mighty appealing for those moonlit summer nights, not to mention spring and fall day cruises.

BMWs are a work-a-day vehicle. well except for the new Z4 maybe. :wink:

Very good advice but at this point in her life she wants to be in "slow comfortable cars". :cry:

In addition she says we are too small for Vettes and there is also that "its a Chevy" thing for some reason :wink:

Actually Dick I was only being partly silly. I was serious about new BMW's not having a dipstick. Who's bright idea was that?

Tell your wife we agree! I hate a 'signature' grill and BMW just can't let it go. Before you say it's 'iconic' or whatever imagine this. What if Chevy decided the grill on the '53 Vette was going to be their iconic one? Imagine that butt-ugly thing on the new C6. And before you say they did that very thing with many of the late model Pontiac's, I hated those grills too.

Yeah, this was absurd when I first heard about it. I don't know how much I'd trust an electronic display with 8 bars on the dash about oil levels. Particularly given how hit or miss Bimmers seems to be about oil consumption.

I guess it's not better/worse than when manual tranny Bimmers started coming with 'lifetime' gear oil....yeah....right.

Hey, you guys want to guess the only brand of car that I've been in that had a hugely over complicated oil warning light system fail?

On the side of the road at a truck stop in Gastonia at 12am none the less?

Now sure, the light was accurate and it was "low on oil", but the sensor is the exact place in the block where oil was spewing out. Luckily Krauts think alike and a kind gentleman with a older Mercedes was there with "spare parts" in the back and a Mercedes Lug bolt that was the right size and pitch. 1 hour later we were back on the road without an oil level light, and with a leak free engine.

I can't understand the worship of this mark with such incredibly poor engineering decisions.

I agree 100% with the dipstick thing. However, I have real world experience now for the past 5 years and 80k miles with one on the E90, and it has worked flawlessly. It's actually much more involved than a simple level sensor since it evaluates oil level only when the engine is running (won't go into here as it can read about on web).

I've done many oil changes on the E90, and it's just like using a regular dipstick. I hold back about 1/4 qt, fire it up, check the level, add more, and done. I used to do that anyway. Now I just fill it with the right amount, check it, and done.

I hated the thought of owning this car without a dipstick. Five years of experience with it has shown all my thoughts were wrong so far. The industry experience BMW has had with electronic dipsticks has shown all the critics were wrong with their doomsday thoughts. Oh well...I still don't like it, but it has LONG ago quit bothering me in anyway.

See, I HATED fuel injection when it came along too. I ripped it off the first car I personally had with it (not counting my wife's cars) and replaced it with sidedraft Webers.

I hated the thought of power windows and locks when they became commonplace as they added needless complexity and weight. I hated a lot of stuff over the years that young people would make fun of me now for.

IIRC, there's an N54 recall for fuel pump failure on the existing model years. hopefully they've gotten it right(er) on the 135i SDrive---uh, I mean 1M.
