Once the seat's out, you only need a needle nose pliers, a package of zip ties (to replace the hog rings that hold the covers on), and a bread knife (don't laugh it worked really well) to trim the seat foam to your liking.
Yeah, you are right. I re-read the Miata.net schpiel last night and pulled the seat out of the car hoping for the best and expecting the worst. It wasn't so bad.

Of course if you can get someone to swap for race seats, that's a whole 'nother ball game.

Of course, while I'm doing this, someone e-mails me and offers me use of a race seat. I start to button the seat back up and go back down to the car to see how to fit the harnesses in. I would have to use them since the seat belt attachment points are integrated with the stock seat.
It turns out I'll probably have to yank the seat out again (at least I left the hog rings off, thinking that I probably would slice the foam when I have more time) and gut the foam because my harnesses don't fit me in the Miata and I'm running short on time to get everything done.
Maybe with a fresh start tonight, these issues will resolve themselves.
I pass the helmet is below the "broomstick" but barely. I'd prefer to have less padding under my bottom and more padding room near my head! I don't know about getting 2" below it with my body dimensions...
Argh! The things (err, insanity) I do for track time
Diane -- Thanks for the offer. I'll have to get your expert Miata instruction the next time you come down for a school since I'll probably be tracking the Miata until the RX-7 breathes fire again...which doesn't look to be anytime soon...
Stephen -- I will probably use zip-ties because they should be quicker to install, but I'll keep you in mind if I change plans.
Thanks everyone!
