Just found out this weekend that the Discount Tire at Harrison & Maynard in Cary is no longer mounting & balancing tires brought in by customers - they'll only mount & balance tires and/or wheels purchased from them directly. Kind of a bummer for the racing community - they've been my local source for tire mounting & balancing for the past few years and had always done a good job with quick turnaround.

Is this a company-wide policy now? I've given a ton of business to the Wake Forest store over the past 4 years and have bought tires from them many times also (6 sets total over 5 cars). I've been "getting the feeling" in recent encounters that something is changing with DT as they seem a bit less friendly in some ways to accommodate "non-standard" customers than in the past. That said, I had a great experience with their south Charlotte store when on a trip last spring and had a sidewall tear...

Of course they don't have Hunter roadforce balancers, so that has always been a negative dealing with DT.

Yeah, the South Charlotte store mounts my Hoosiers (mounted a new set just 3 weeks ago) and will do my 18" tires for $10 each. I don't ever balance autocross tires, so the roadforce balancing doesn't buy me much.

It wouldn't surprise me if DT stops mounting tires not bought there. It's a hassle and not a real money maker. - AB

Based on my conversation with the store manager, it's not a company-wide policy, at least not yet.

Several years ago the DT location on Hwy 55 in Cary offered road force balancing, but I haven't been there in awhile, so I'm not sure if they still do.

Try Jeb Brookshire at the Millbrook Rd location just off Glenwood in NW Raleigh. Duraleigh RD changes to Millbrook at Glenwood (aka 70).

Quote from Jeb:

for the props guys! Just to revive an old thread.... I am no longer in Durham (yea!). I am now at the Millbrook Rd location. The store is about two blocks in on Millbrook at the Millbrook/70 intersection. I am happy to be closer to home for sure!

The number there is 919-789-8356

Perhaps it has something to do with sales picking up that there's no time for tires purchased elsewhere? Not a bad problem to have these days...

The great thing about Discount is that they can usually match Tire Rack or others' pricepoints, so why bother with getting tires shipped your home or work as I've done countless times in the past and just write one check?

Exactly. They have always price-matched either Tire Rack or DiscountTireDirect price for me. No complaints about that. It would just suck if they discontinued dealing with the small percentage of time you want them to do some mounting work on non-purchased-there tires.

If they could get Hoosiers, I would do this. Unfortunately, they only can get Kumhos. - AB

FYI,

"Hoosier Tom" will ship directly to the tire store of your choice. He used to ship slicks to McNair Performance when I used him for mounting.

I haven't seen Hoosier Tom at an event in about 3 years. Although Tire Rack does support the autocross series, I still like using R&S Racing (Ron & Sonya Vermulm: www.rsracing.com

Ron runs a CP car and brings his rolling tire business with him. I pay no shipping or tax and can have them mounted at the site for $8 a tire. With shipping from TireRack and others at nearly $100, it's a nice cost savings. - AB

I called him last year and after telling him about the babyhauler (Si sedan), he told me in so many words that he didn't want to sell me a set of A6's because my car was 'way too heavy'. I know it's a tire eating machine, but there's probably more to it than he cared to share, although he's not afraid to chat it up.

It was a very strange 30 minute conversation to say the least.

+1. Jeb was even able to get me Dunlop Direzza's even though they are apparently a "Tire Rack exclusive" now.

Yeah, whatever stock DT's warehouses had when the Tire Rack exclusive rights announcement was made are still there and since they probably don't see super fast, I'm sure there is still plenty there. But once they are gone, DT won't be able to source any more.

Sounds like every conversation with "Hoosier Tom".

Guess I should chime in here...

I have heard nothing regarding us not mounting outside purchases. I still do so and will continue to do so. The difference is supposed to be that outside purchases are charged more than our "normal" installation price for tires purchased from a DTC store or DTD. I do my best to keep things fair for the club at my store. Please keep in mind that what I may do at my store is the latitude I am given and not necessarily what my compadres do at thier stores.

Most of the triangle area stores have Hunter Roadfoce Balancers. There are a couple of stores that use a different machine. FWIW, I have the Hunter equipment in my store.

I can get Hoosiers, just hard to match Hoosier Tom's price. If you do order from him, our stores are not set up to receive your drop shipments. It would be way to much to track. If we order it in for you it ships to the store. If you order it yourself online, then you get to lug it to one of our stores.

I hope this helps you guys. Just keep in mind that each manager is entitled to run his business as they see fit. Keith I am not sure who you talked to in Cary, but I will call that store manager when I have a chance.

Any other questions you guys have please call me at the store number someone posted earlier.
