Demolition Derby Fri, Sat, and Sun at NC State Fair

Just wanted to let folks know who might be interested - there will be demolition derby events at the "Sam G. Rand" Grandstands (same place as the BMX bike ramp stunt show) at the NC State Fair at the following times this weekend:

Friday 22-Oct 7:30PM
Saturday 23-Oct 2:30PM
Saturday 23-Oct 7:30PM
Sunday 24-Oct 2:30PM

They have heats for compact, mid-size, and full-size cars at each event.

My 4x4 club (http://cnc4x4.org) does the towing for all the derby events. We have also built an Astro van for a special minivan heat that they have on Saturday at 2:30PM. It's painted like the "A-Team" and it looks good.

I'll post some pics when I am able to get them uploaded.

We saw you a few times. You also drove by us on the way out of the fair, right before the fireworks started.

That was a good show. Got better as the cars and engines got bigger, but it was fun to watch Jimmy Goodman stalk a car and then go ramming into it from out of nowhere. Smart using those space-saver spares for rear tires - the other two cars that were left when time was up were dragging their full size rears around after they got pinned by the rear fenders and bumper. They couldn't really do much damage, because they couldn't get much faster than walking pace.

Ya we saw you working over there today. This was the first REAL demo derby I have ever seen and it was great. Seems like I might be looking for a car to come into the junk yard that might fit the bill!!!

Did they run the van's on all 3 days? that was kinda fun watching the "revenge of the soccer mom's"

They only ran them on Saturday afternoon. They'll keep it to a single heat like that until enough vans show up to run multiple heats and a feature, like the other car classes.

We'll have the A-Team van back for next year. It was the strongest one out there chassis-wise, but lost all the coolant even though the radiator didn't get busted (bad cap let it blow out the overflow?), so when it stalled one time, it was too hot to re-start. Once it cooled down after the derby, it re-started and I drove it onto the trailer. We won best appearance award though.

I'm sure you can tell in the video - the track was ***slick***. The vans were the first heat of the afternoon event, and they had just watered down the packed clay track. We were running grooved snow tires in the rear and a welded diff. And it was real hard to steer to line up shots.

We were "friends" with the yellow van, so you'll notice we don't take a couple open shots on him.

And you're not allowed to re-enforce these vehicles other than chaining or welding the doors shut, driver door protection, and wiring the hood closed.

You are not allowed to hit people in the driver door. You're disqualified if you do, so you see a lot of people stop before hitting if they are anywhere close to the driver door.
