James is on to something. We tend to gravitate to what we heard in our formative years for the rest of your life. Everything after that becomes "crap." I do believe, however, today's crap is crappier crap than my crap. 8)

I've also heard that your synapse are formed in your teen years and the music you listen to help to maps them, therefore that music fits your brain better.

one of the other points has already been said,

And the for your really easy trivia question of the day...what place in rock history (and some will say the downfall of rock) does the song that Cline linked to hold?

First Video played on MTV, which ironically doesn't play videos anymore.

Winnar. It's pop culture TV now. Yes, I think it's crap.

I don't watch a lot of TV these days, but I will happily sit back on a Friday night and enjoy whatever Paladia is playing. They get it right more often than they get it wrong...

I didn't click the link but I'm guessing it was The Buggles with Video Killed the Radio Star.(slow 3g network)

Does anyone else find themselves listening to new to you music from your formative listening age. I'm "discovering" music from the mid to late 80's that I
a. Didn't like before, but I do now because it's familiar.
Or
b. Just found out about and somehow wasn't on the radar.

Sidenote-
I remember the Metal I used to listen to seemed much harder than it seems now. It's down right melodic.
I'm thinking Judas, Maiden, even early Metallica and Dave Mustaine's band ( the name ecapes me at the moment.

Megadeth

and YES I totally agree with you all the REALLY hard stuff from my youth is really kinda tame when I listen to it now. I guess we have become desensitized.

I totally dominated my lawn rocking out to Megadeth a couple of weeks ago!

It is commercialization, MTV, Pretty People, Record companies, sheep like people and Disney that has kilt music. Nowdays the new "Hot" artists are created by the Disney empire Britney, Hayden, Miley, Hanna (Wait, aren't they the same?) creating marketing - not music. Radio only plays what is "popular" or what is paid for by the record industry. (Wasn't that called Payola in the old days?)

OH well.

radio only plays commercials Rob. satellite radio plays more channels. music is a thing of the past for the most part.

who actually listens to new music? probably the people creating new music. how would i find these people? college stations? the internet?

face it Rob. we're too old for new music. not that there really is any new music. the US has been at war overseas for almost ten years now and i can't name a single Andrew's Sisters song. oops, i forgot. i don't listen to country music.

Which brings us full circle. Glee out sells The Beatles singing cover songs, proving that there are very few good new songs. And that a good song remains good decades later.
I can't imagine anyone pulling out a Lady Gaga tune 20 years from now saying 'now that's when they knew how to write great music.'

But what do I know, i'm old.

Totally, when I was a kid I spent money on cars, golf and girls there was no money left for stereos, albums, cassette, or eight tracks. About all I had were the 12 8tracks I got from joing columbia house. It it wasn't them or the other few i had I didn't know it. I know 10 times more stuff from those years than I did then.
