I am going on a business trip next spring and will be in Venice, Italy then doing a Greek cruise and back to Venice. I can then just take a travel allowance and fly back when I want to. I think I want to stay about 5 more days and do some wandering. I like the idea of a rail pass. We will have too much luggage to rent a motorcycle. While I would hate to miss Rome, I'm thinking more about France and Germany. Any Ideas?

I'll get my brother in law to read this and give you advice. Mike made "business trips" and vacations to Europe before he came here to get his MBA.

I think it great that you are opening an office in Europe and our touring cities to decide which one to use.

Cline,

You can easily spend 2 or 3 days just in Venice. The Vaporetto pass in Venice is the way to go. Lots of luggage can be a problem on the Vaporetto, private water taxis are available but expensive. It depends on where you stay.

As far as France vs Germany vs Rome - what are you interested in seeing?

For museums and history its hard to beat Rome and Paris. Scenic drives along the Med (south of France east into Italy) are pretty amazing too.

Then again, you could always drive the Ring :-)

Flights in Europe are pretty inexpensive, but airports are a hassle. A Railpass probably makes sense but depends on how many places you plan to visit. Lots of options in that program.

5 days is not much, there is so much to see in Europe. Don't try to do 5 country in 5 days.
We always planed our trip over there to see a particular area. If you are in Venice you can do Northern Italy.
Leave Venice to Verona, drive around the Lago di Garda that place is wonderful and the road around the lake are unbelievable.
From there go to Modena an Maranello to see Ferrari, Lamborghini is close too, maybe 20miles from Maranello.
There you will be almost in the Chianti area, Maybe do Firenze and then back to Venice.
That will be a very nice trip.

Keep the ideas coming. I will have spent 2 days in Venice. I know it makes more sense to stay in Northern Italy but I want to maximize what I see. Don't know when I will get back. I thought about Maranello but I understand you have to own a Ferrari to get a proper tour. The driving idea is good, what do rentals cost?

I have been on websites about the Ring. As much as I would like to do that I don't know if time allows to do properly.

What do I want to see? Well we will have already scene all the ancient stuff in Greece so I don't know if I have see Rome. Think I want a taste of the real countries not all the touristy stuff.

Car rental price are kind of similar to here. From Venice to the ring that will be a full day of driving an another one to comeback.
If you can fly to Frankfurt then you are 2 hrs away. Austria is nice so another itinerary might be: same start, leave Venice to Verona, drive around the Lago di Garda
Then north to Bolzano and Innsbruck, then to Salzburg ( Mozart place ) with a short stint on the German Autobahn. Then south to Zell am See, and the Grossglockner pass, you might see some car prototype there. This is a place where company go to test car. When we did it long time ago we saw some disguise cars. Then back to Venice.

Or for a little more driving. From Venice to Zell am See, passing by the Grossglockner pass, then Salzburg, then Vienna ( we did 2 days in Vienna, very nice, on that particular trip we did Austria ) and back to Venice.

I concur. The area around Lago di Garda is beautiful. Greece and Rome are not the same. Don't compare them to the Italians or you will end up a permanent visitor  If you do the northern route from Venice you could proceed from Lago di Garda to Milano or as Patrice said, go south and visit Maranello, Firenze, Roma. We did that trip minus Firenze. The Ferrari museum is awesome.

Alternatively, you could go up the coast. We rented a car and drove through Italy. It was exciting to say the least. The Italians have different rules of the road compared to the Germans.

Have Fun
