I've heard it bandied about that the club's events aren't legally car racing, but is that from the point of view of a life insurance company? I'm applying for more life insurance, and there's a question about participating in "motor vehicle or boat racing". It would be a bummer to die and then have payment denied to my loved ones because of some (@&#& paperwork!

If it's a timed event, it's racing. - AB

As far as my insurance company knows, I don't race, I participate in precision driving exercises. I'm also not a pilot...as far as they know.

I think it depends on what kind of racing you are doing. When I got my newest life insurance policy, I asked my agent about it and he gave me a separate form to fill out. The form was really geared towards circle track/drag strip type racing though and not what we do. My quote didn't really change after submitting that information either.

My insurance agent is on the site *cough Cline Hall* so I'm sure he can chime in here. - AB

Cline is our agent too. He helped me with *that* paperwork since he knows exactly what to say. You might get him to give you a quote.

+1 for that Cline guy. he seems to know what he is talking about.

my life insurance is with someone else and according to that agent, after two years of premiums it is almost impossible to not get a pay out. this guy felt the need to tell me this in front of my wife. i'd swear he winked at her too.

so.. suicide / crashing into armco....... same thing. :P

Yeah, I'd get a quote from Cline, but my Dad has been in the business as long as I can remember... He just doesn't know anything about what they consider racing or not.

IMHO, autox, rallyx, time trials, etc are NOT "racing".

To be considered racing, I think you need to be on the course with other cars at the same time, trying to get to the finish line before the other cars. Driver's schools would not count as racing either- that whole "point-by to pass" thing.....

Keep in mind, I am NOT an insurance expert, and I'm sure plenty of folks will post up 1000 reasons that they think I'm wrong.

+1 for Cline

Great rates, service and support. What else could you need?

In this case it sounds like he might not want to get cut out of his parent's will.

I mean Cline's a great guy and all, but sometimes you gotta go with family.

My insurance agent basically said something like, "If you're not getting paid to win, you're not racing."

Like all free advice, it is worth what you pay for it...so here's my experience:
My life insurance carrier agreed to carry me for an extra $100/year due to my explanation of being an HPDE instructor. I figure that if they have any additional charges to the basic rate then it would be difficult for my estate to be deprived of any benefit due to my "reckless behavior" that was not covered.
As we are all aware, our most clever arguments are of little use if we are not here to present them. I wanted something in writing that all parties to the policy could agree upon.
One of the reasons that I discontinued the timetrial series was the addition of passing to the timed event. That went beyond the original description of my track practices in the insurance statement that included "no passing during a timed/competition event". It seems silly, but, as I stated, if my family needed the coverage it would be because I was not available to make the cogent argument.

I didn't want to risk any claim denial for the same reasons as Charlie so was absolutely up front about this when I applied for life (and at the same time disability) insurance. This was when I was still regularly co-driving rally so the questions were pretty detailed. Both insurers sent me a long questionnaire and then called with follow-up questions. Interestingly, in the end, the life insurance didn't care one way or another. The disability one went up a notch or two but still didn't reach prohibitive rates.

Since then I've dropped the disability, as it was too expensive for the % of income it made up, but that's a different thread.

I think that's the best tact-- I just checked "racing" and will let them sort it out.
