just read the actual article and it is confirmed that the Mustang GT was the premium WITHOUT the full track package. It had the upgraded brakes and 3.73 gears, but none of the optional suspension pieces like the M3 was ordered with.

Considering the main complaint from Randy was the shock tuning and front dive it makes you wonder how the test would have come out with the full track package installed.

i have to admit, i'm really smitten by the new mustang and its 400+ hp. the fact that it matched the m3 on track despite the suspension handicap is very impressive. if i sold my e36 m3 i'd be visiting the ford dealer without delay.

You can buy some darn good shocks for the $25K difference in price between the GT and the M3

Mustangs are pretty much stuck with the dive. Anti-dive would tend to stiffen the front suspension and the physics of the package are hard to work around.

FYI the first time I saw Randy Pobst was at a Pro Solo in California in the early 80's. He was driving a Volkswagon Rabbit/Golf/Whatever that he drove from Florida. He ended up in the Challenge against a well driven Cobra. Fun to watch the Cobra eat up the gap with a stuffed animal of some sort (rabbit?) hanging out the hatch of Randy's car.

One of the Cobra drivers was Mary Rice who ulimately won MANY Solo National championships in Ladies and came close in an Open Class CP Camaro or Mustang.

Might be kind of neat to have a "normal" 2011GT with automatic and then add a blower. Probably not a good idea unless the goal is to go viral on You Tube:  Put a trailer hitch on the Mustang and tow the race car like I used to do with my 88 5.0.

What Dick said. I love how they say "the numbers don't lie, and a winner is a winner". Last I checked $25,000 are numbers too, and they don't lie either. For $25K extra I'd want a car that was more than 0.09 faster than the Mustang.

Keep in mind that was a $40K MSRP mustang. I'm seeing reports that after rebates, you can get out the door with a Mustang GT for under $30K.

I wonder which one would be cheaper to maintain?

The M3 at first I believe because it's free, aka included in the car's price.

maybe the comparison should be between the mustang and a e46 m3, they're much closer price-wise. obviously the e46 wouldn't be new but 30k will buy a very nice low mileage example. or a c5 z06 :)

10K oil change intervals (8 qt? synth) shouldn't be too hard to cover with that $25K.

Of course, if the M3 were doable for me there are all sorts of reasons why not to buy the Mustang. One of the biggest is spelled Corvette. Or do like Mike does for his BMW's, etc. . . . find good used ones.

Don't kid yourself German fanboi. Take a look at the vehicles you own and count how many were designed by a German company. You'd never buy a Ford over a BMW.

Got a soft spot for Mustangs. Had a 1972 Mustang Sprint, which was a mach 1 in honor of the 1972 olympics. And the blue would go with my company theme. I would have to buy some straight leg jens and some Brylcream and get a tatoo though!

i've yet to drive either. and to be honist i was sitting next to a new mustang in metallic grey at a stoplight yesterday and thought it doesn't look bad. its still big and fa,t but then again i've been saying the same thing about new bmw's for a while now. no matter what if the keys to both were laying in front of me i would pick up the set for the M3 every time no questions asked. i dont think thats a surprise to anyone here.
