I know right Steve. We can talk crap about how BMW has regressed from their roots, but one slightly critical impression about a Mustang and the excrement hits the fan.

I was kidding about my earlier comments. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the gt and z. Just remember next time the Internet is serious business. :D

You want things to get ugly around here? Generators and awnings. That's all it takes.

That's like screaming "Hitler" to try to invoke Godwin's Law. People are too smart for that.

Well, except maybe the pushrod crowd. *ducks*

I just got that issue in mail yesterday and it's definitely a good read that basically emphasizes that on paper, that cars are almost identical if you don't look at what it takes to pick one up off the lot.

It really reminds me of all the comparisons that were made when the Evo 8 and STi were first sold here in the states. For $20k, you can have an Evo over a ________ or a _________ that also does 0-60 in four seconds and does .9 g's, etc...

I don't think that the typical buyer of a car that's $65k is also going to be looking at a similar car that's $25k less, but it's fun to compare the numbers just to illustrate a point; the new 5.0 is one hell of a beast!

Personally, I love the 'banglebutt' E92/90 M3's although it's taken a while for the design to grow on me. I could do without all the gadgetry but I have feeling they are vital to make the car fast, unlike some of it's predecessors. If it was my coin, I'd love to nab another E46 M3 (in Laguna), a set of shocks, Ultimates, light wheels and A6's to see how far off the S2ks one would be.

Dick, that video of Strano in a 'new to him' Mustang was very awesome! Thanks for posting!

It's obvious if you had exactly $29,645.07 for a RWD V8 with a blue oval badge on the front that the Mustang would be the best choice...come on people!!

Strano won the Pro Solo Finale. Results say 2011 Mustang but that doesn't mean he actually drove his car. Nats will be interesting.

I test drove (barely) a 2011 GT with Brembos and 3:73 gears in Cary with only one decent opportunity to floor it. Felt FAST to me which probably means I'm way behind on what FAST really means.

Also test drove a 2011 GT automatic with the only available gears (3:15). Sure scoots up a ramp!

I might have taken that bet. Give me a totally stock 1988 GT versus a totally stock E30 M3, same tires on both, and select the right venue.

Having lived through those days, including test driving the E30 numerous times trying to convince myself about it, I haven't bought into the mysticism modern folk (lol) attach to reminiscent views of the E30 M3. IMO, it's status is vastly overrated, and I sure enjoyed thoroughly romping them at the track back in the day with my '72 Bavaria "big 4-door sedan" with its 2-valve motor and all. :)

Man Chuck, you know what you just said would get you shot on Bimmerforums :). Yeah, the e30 M3 is revered as a demigod among vehicles. I still love the way it looks regardless of its actual performance :).

haha, yep, I suppose. I've been a BMWCCA member for more than 30 years, but I guess I don't drink all the kool-aid. I thought the car was overrated at the time too. :) The '88 325is was within a couple of ticks of the 1/4mile of the M3, was a far smoother and more torquey engine, and it cost a lot less. Add some suspension mods to it, and it was a lot more livable everyday car too "back in the day." Things changed going forward though. Compare something like an E46 330i to the M3 or an E39 540i to the M5, and it is a much different deal in more modern times.

However, I wouldn't mind owning "the right" E30 M3. ;) (i.e. completely stock, unmolested 30k mile car with full provenance).

As an 18-year old "back in the day" I remember vividly all the C&D articles about the E30M3, and enjoyed a couple rides in a new Diamondschwartz metallic one, courtesy of my uber-rich first-year college roommate. In contrast, having graduated from a high school where Mustangs, Camaros and F150s outnumbered Hondas by at least a bazillion to one I know a bit about Fox body Mustangs, what they were about and who had an interest in them.

As I was trying to point out in my above post, in 1988 no one would honestly do a magazine comparo of the two cars, except to show how much of a gap there was between them. The fact they are now mentioned (legitimately) within the same breath shows a substantial convergence between a former raw Euro Sportsedan and a muscular American Iron ponycar. Iconic cars both, now competing in the same realm.

/not a KoolAid drinker
//thinks Mustangs are fine cars
///not a fan of modern BMWs
