Who would've put the E30M3 against a Fox-body Mustang back in the day? No one. The fact that there has been a convergence is worthy of discussion in and of itself.
I might have taken that bet. Give me a totally stock 1988 GT versus a totally stock E30 M3, same tires on both, and select the right venue.
Having lived through those days, including test driving the E30 numerous times trying to convince myself about it, I haven't bought into the mysticism modern folk (lol) attach to reminiscent views of the E30 M3. IMO, it's status is vastly overrated, and I sure enjoyed thoroughly romping them at the track back in the day with my '72 Bavaria "big 4-door sedan" with its 2-valve motor and all.

Man Chuck, you know what you just said would get you shot on Bimmerforums

. Yeah, the e30 M3 is revered as a demigod among vehicles. I still love the way it looks regardless of its actual performance

haha, yep, I suppose. I've been a BMWCCA member for more than 30 years, but I guess I don't drink all the kool-aid. I thought the car was overrated at the time too.

The '88 325is was within a couple of ticks of the 1/4mile of the M3, was a far smoother and more torquey engine, and it cost a lot less. Add some suspension mods to it, and it was a lot more livable everyday car too "back in the day." Things changed going forward though. Compare something like an E46 330i to the M3 or an E39 540i to the M5, and it is a much different deal in more modern times.
However, I wouldn't mind owning "the right" E30 M3.

(i.e. completely stock, unmolested 30k mile car with full provenance).
