Good Lord, a $1,000,000 fine! Interesting concept of a wealth based ticket. Not sure that I agree w/ that, but subject for debate on this forum I'm guessing.

If you get pulled over in a Civic wearing jeans and a t-shirt, they just ask for the change in your ashtray and send you on your way.

180 mph!?!?! No sense in even braking when you hear the radar detector.

This fine system tied to wealth is just a publicity thing more than anything. They like the news when someone does this as they think the PR will be the deterrent more than anything else. The reality is the most precious thing to MOST people driving like that is STILL the privilege of driving, so the most effective punishment, IMHO, is taking that away.

Yeah, speeding that fast, even on the Autobahn, is just crazy. It endangers others lives. I am a libertian but it you threaten my safety you cross the line of personal rights. Put him in jail and throw away the key!

What about the typical American Interstate with 5000lb plus SUVs piloted by brain dead drivers tailgating at 75mph while they eat and text? Dare one leave proper room in traffic lest it be immediately plugged by 3 more idiots driving said vehicles.

Having spent two weeks in Germany recently, it is really sad what we call highways here in the US. In Germany, if you're caught tailgating less than 30% of the mandatory gap, you lose your license for 1 to 3 months. On our "highways" that gap probably represents 3 or 4 or more SUVs at 75mph. It was so nice to drive someplace where everyone not only knows the rules of the road but follows them. Driving with the typical German public was like being at a track event here.

Also, on the Autobahn if you are exceeding 130kph, and there is a wreck, you may share in the liability even if you didn't cause the problem. Courts apparently decide on such issues based on all conditions at the time, etc.

In the unlimited sections, we generally ran 160-180kph,or so, which was a very comfortable cruising speed. 160kph was a typical middle lane speed when 3 lanes were present. Rarely did we get passed by someone going hugely faster than that. Seeing a Polizei car up ahead running maybe 140kph creates that "oh crap" feeling in you until you remember you're in Germany, so you just go blasting right on past it (while using proper signals to move to the right lane after the pass, etc, of course). The fact that Germany actually strictly enforces tailgating laws and lane use laws is simply something an enthusiast from the US has to go experience at least once in life. :)

whenever i visit england and then come back to the US, it usually takes me a while to get back into the US mode of "pass everywhere, drive whatever speed you want, in whatever lane".

1. it was 180 mph 290 kph

2. When I'm king of the world I will have a fleet of undercover cop cars pulling idiots over and shooting them on the spot. The system of ticketing cars driving a couple of miles over the posted save limit but allowing idiots to drive is the most screwed up thing ever.

Amen brother. Stricter testing when issuing licenses would solve a lot of problems. The biggest problem is....anyone can get one.

Remember!! Here in the US, the ability to drive on public roads is a right and not a privilege! ;)

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

I agree. It's been 10 years ago now, but we spent two weeks driving all over England and Scotland, and the drivers there are lightyears ahead of US drivers. The right lane (fast lane) was only used for passing (what a concept), and drivers immediately moved back left. Only once did I come up on a right lane (fast lane) bandit who was blocking the lane and not moving over, and my wife said that must be an American on vacation.

I can't express enough how enjoyable it was to drive in Germany this summer. One example of how drivers on the Autobahn are courteous and pay attention: We were going about 160kph in the middle of three lanes, when I was presented with a car doing maybe 120kph up ahead that moved into the middle lane to pass a truck and a car in the left lane perhaps closing at 200kph as I glanced in my mirror. I was just about to lift and brake when I noticed in my mirror that the fast closing car had matched my speed about 8-10 car lengths back. I intuitively signaled, moved left, passed the dude in front of me, signaled, moved right, and the BMW (debaged 5-series) accelerated on past.

Drivers on the Autobahn are extremely aware of stuff like I experienced, and they seem to always work to make stuff happen smoothly and efficiently. I was continually astounded to be around such drivers and really enjoyed the experience. :) Just like a well-run track event here where experienced and capable people do the right thing on a continual basis is essentially what I experienced everyday on the roads there.

Must be a fine for being Swiss since the previous record holder was Swiss too.

The Autobahn is great to drive on. We were in a cab between Frankfurt and Heidelberg and someone passed the cab while talking on his cell phone and the driver started cussing him out for being on the phone.
