Part of the conversation of looking for brake pads for the mustang brought up the issue of using a scan tool when changing out the brake fluid. It's needed in order to set the ABS valve into a mode where you can change all brake fluid.

What's the best bang for buck on market for a decent scan tool that has this function? Since most everything I own is ODB2 now, I think having one on hand just makes sense in order to diagnose issues.

Recommendations?

I have an Actron CP9180. Does everything I need it to do but I'm not sure it will cirulate the ABS pump.

Best thing to do, flush it, go autox and hit ABS a half dozen times and flush it again :).

On older ABS units you could just apply voltage across certain leads to get it to circulate, but with how complex they've become, I'd be wary of that.

Yeah a DIY Scan Tool will not do it. They are readers. They will reset codes but beyond that not much else.

Based on your brake pad thread. Just bleed your brakes and move on. If you have problems with air in the ABS. Take it to Ford and get it bled out with an ABS bleed. This is something rarely ever needed.

On the GM you need a Tech II setup. Those scan everything in the computer beyond your DIY scanner. They also let you set things. You can change anything with them, including bleeding ABS. They also cost a couple of grand... easily...

Rodney, if you are looking to move to STX next year you should see if the SCT3 or diablosport tuner have this functionality. You will need a tuner to uncork that 30whp with a intake anyways.

In my experience (with hondas) you need a specific tool that is probably out of most's price range. There is a special ALB (Anti lock brake) tool for Hondas and I have never got the impression they are cheap.

Rodney listen to what Graham is telling you....there is no need to bleed the ABS in an HPDE car if your not having trouble with a soft pedal, your asking for trouble if you start messing with the ABS when you don't have to. No heat is generated in the ABS so there is no need to bleed it. Fresh fluid is only needed at the calipers, thats all thats necessary to bleed on your brake system. Your over thinking this.
