So my 9 y/o son turned me onto this show via watching Netflix on our PS3. One of the episodes had the host visiting the triangle and several restaurants located near the universities. I feel like I obviously missed a few things during my 4 years @ NCSU as there were two downtown I had never heard of but really wanna try now.

Any experience with "The Pit Authentic BBQ" (328 W. Davie St.) and "The Roast Grill" (7 S. WEST STREET)

judging by the difficulty i have finding parking at my client directly across the street from the pit, i'd say it's quite the popular hangout.

I always feel that when food shows come to the Triangle they never go to the good places (not a hit on the Pit). Allen and Sons is way better barbecue than anywhere else in the Triangle, but it's kind of a hole in the wall and not close . Maybe Guy Fieri will go there sometime :). Rachel Ray (barf) went to the Q joint in CH which is good, but I actually like their charcuterie better than the actual barbecue :) (duck confit, tasso ham, andouille etc).

Which A&S? There are two, and they are different. I like the one on 15-501 between CH and Pittsboro, but most seem to prefer the one on Airport Road just north of I-40. I don't know if they're different because it's just a different "son" running each one or what, but it's Jimmy that owns the one I like.

+1 for the A&S between CH and Pittsboro. I don't get there very often but I love their food. I prefer it to the one on Airport Rd as well.

if there is such a thing as "upscale" bbq the Pit is a good place for it. i've taken clients there a couple of times and had good food...still doesn't beat Old Time IMO.

You guys in the triangle think Smithfield's is good BBQ (not even CLOSE) so I'll take your opinions for what I paid. If you want REAL BBQ you have to drive east (I know you guys hate that) and come to Parker's.

That's authentic eastern style for sure. I used to sling bbq at Melton's in Rocky Mount in high school. Same stuff. Man it was great to get a $.75 meal after work with fried oysters, flounder, bbq, taters, stew, and chicken pastry.

I liked the Pit too. Although it was crazy as hell when I went there right after it was featured on Food Network. They did a big special on Ed Reed, the 'cue extrordinaire behind the scenes.

I went with a group and half of our orders were backwards and they were literally out of like half the menu items because they didn't expect to be that slammed. I'll tell you what though, what we had was really great and the portions are generous. Good beer menu, IIRC too.

Hopefully, I'll make it back there soon.

I was born and raised in Goldsboro so I will absolutely agree with you there. Wilbers and McCalls isn't bad either. Haven't been to Bill Ellis in forever but back in the early nineties it was pretty good too.

hey, don't go lump'n us all in that same group...Smithfields is NOT good bbq...their chicked is OK.

and don't think eastern nc has the cornerstone on good bbq, there are some good places in this area, and IMO, Lexington BBQ (aka, Honeymonks) is the best in NC.

That's right John. BBQ Lodge honestly isn't too shabby up on Capital. They have a drivethru too when you're pressed for time and want something unhealthily delicious for lunch that's quick for $6.

Vincent, is there usually a DD shuttle? I know some buddies that own Zingo. I could bring it up to them when I see them.
