According to sources inside GM, the C7 Corvette will be one of the first cars fitted with the next-generation small-block V-8. GM has announced it is investing $890 million to develop and manufacture.

GM has confirmed the new small-block V-8s will feature aluminum blocks and heads, direct-injection, and a new combustion system. Our sources say the C7 engine will displace 5.5 liters, with a target output of about 440 HP

The new small-block will retain a traditional overhead-valve layout, ensuring compact dimensions and lower manufacturing costs. Prototype engines reportedly are already running on test beds in Detroit

Pushrods are still in!

This should be a nice engine .2L less than the LS1 and 90HP more. It'll be interesting to see how much the squeeze out of this design before it gets replaced. The LSs made it to ~640 factory HP, 550 in a mass produced car.

What does "new combustion system" translate to?

Probably moving the valves to 12 degrees from 15, then adding a port D/I hybrid system to keep carbon deposits from building up.

You know, I don't really have a problem with this. Japanese/Korean car companies have been getting government aide for decades now. I'd much rather see my money going towards real research as opposed to a banker's bonus.

I agree. Great investment . . . and I'm a Ford guy! Not only will it be a great engine used in a bunch of vehicles remember that if GM had died a whole bunch of suppliers to ALL the US factories (not just GM, Ford and Chrysler) would have gone down too.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Got to go with the flow . . . ever since the Capitalists shipped our factories and our jobs to commie China. Think about where most of the computers and other electronic equipment is made these days.

at least the Japanese build a tractor that stops like it should.

so am i to understand that the LS6 was too primitive? why cut back on displacement?
