To get back the world land speed record for a production car, Shelby SuperCars is planning to launch a new model that would be faster than Bugatti’s new Veyron 16.4 Super Sport model.
In 2007, Shelby held the record when its SSC Ultimate Aero posted a time of 412.28km/h (256.23mph) while being driven on a closed 19km (12 mile) stretch of road in Nevada. But last June, Bugatti’s new Veyron got a time of 431.072km/h (267.91mph) at Volkswagen’s 21km (13 mile) Ehra-Lessien test track. In a statement, Shelby congratulated Bugatti and then it revealed that it was working on a new model that would be “upping the ante all fronts.”
This project is expected to debut before the summer ends. Shelby said that it is confident that that new design chief Jason Castriota’s more aerodynamic model has the extra speed to beat Bugatti’s record. Previously, Castriota has worked on designing the Bertone Mantide and Pininfarina P4/5.
Shelby also said that it is “anxious to show the world” the first design that Castriota has made for the company.
