"BUZZ" sells product. realistically the demographics of the two brands are on opposite ends of the spectrum. i don't think Mini actually thinks they will be stealing prospective Porsche buyers.
it is a completely ridiculous ad campaign and i believe that is Mini's plan anyway. i think it is marketing genius.

Speak for yourself

I agree with your assessment on Buzz, which doesn't mean it isn't fun to speculate on the outcome. They're going for the enormous demographic of people who want to make fun of Porsche drivers.
sorry, i might have sounded harsh. obviously Mini will do what they need to do to finish first if they have to go so far as to cheat. again, i think it is brilliant. stupid, but brilliant.
Actually I don't think Mini would rig the race. I think if they did race (and Porsche would win), I think the Mini spin would be "Oh well. But we did get 90% of thefun for 50% of the price" or something like that. Someone pointed out earlier that they could show how many other things you could buy in addition to the Mini to equal the price of the Porsche.
I also agree on the Buzz factor. And I also agree that this is not going to sway those about to buy a Porsche, but might sway those who were considering a Mini. I however thing Mini has milked this about as far as it can go. Anything more would have the opposite effect.
And Cline, I drive a 100 HP car (but am building a 250+ HP light weight car). And I am an unapologetic Porsche fan. So I don't know where I fit into your theory.
