Been trying to gain some perspective on this by researching the Pemex/Ixtoc spill in 1979. 3mil barrels of oil spilled along Mexico and texas beaches, lots of cleanup/degreasing of wildlife and an airlift of sea turtle babies...but haven't found any info on long-term effects. Anyone have better Google skillz and can offer insight?
In comparison (so far) the BP spill has leaked around 900,000 barrels of oil to date. The downside is it took 10 months to cap the shallow-water Pemex spill, which bodes poorly for BP since they are doing many of the same things Pemex did to stem the leak 30 years earlier...
Of course, I'm no enviro-geek but I presume the geography of the US Gulf Coast may be more fragile than Texas/Mex coastline, even though there are barrier islands, bays/bayous etc. Let's hope these new efforts start paying off before hurricane season kicks into high gear.
