CNBCHD's "Spillcam" still shows an ugly plume, so unlikely a complete fix. But hopefully progress is being made.

That's one nifty robot for sure.

Seeing this on the news as a possibility wasn't really a great way to start the morning:

Yeah, especially since we vacation each year for two weeks over July 4th in Hatteras Village. I'm not amused. I mean we spend a LOT of time in or on the water in some way (normally). *sigh*

I don't get me wrong I don't mean it in a geocentric or in "I just want my life back" kind of way to quote the foottasting BP figurehead. I'm not like "keep the oil damage in the gulf and not NC". I'm worried about the amount of ecosystem affected.

It was tough seeing the birds immersed motionless in the plume as the tide of oil surrounded them on NBC news last night. So sad...

I meant it in a "me" sort of way, but obviously the damage is much bigger than my two week vacation.

This is gonna suck for a lot of people in a LOT of ways, and then there's the animals... Ugh.

This is going to suck in a lot of ways for the folks whose livelihoods depend on clean and healthy coasts.

I just read an article that states that the Persian Gulf has mostly recovered from the massive oil spills after the first Gulf War . . . Of course that was 19 years ago.

I also just read an article about the Dioxin pollution in Vietnam due to the use of defoiliants . . . 40 years ago. Huge areas of the country still suffer from major birth defect issues.

Dick (whose Vietnam tour did not involve exposure to defoiliants . . . plus no kids anyway)

Been trying to gain some perspective on this by researching the Pemex/Ixtoc spill in 1979. 3mil barrels of oil spilled along Mexico and texas beaches, lots of cleanup/degreasing of wildlife and an airlift of sea turtle babies...but haven't found any info on long-term effects. Anyone have better Google skillz and can offer insight?

In comparison (so far) the BP spill has leaked around 900,000 barrels of oil to date. The downside is it took 10 months to cap the shallow-water Pemex spill, which bodes poorly for BP since they are doing many of the same things Pemex did to stem the leak 30 years earlier...

Of course, I'm no enviro-geek but I presume the geography of the US Gulf Coast may be more fragile than Texas/Mex coastline, even though there are barrier islands, bays/bayous etc. Let's hope these new efforts start paying off before hurricane season kicks into high gear.

Links to all the ROVs that are watching the spill. There are 12 of them but they aren't all on all the time.
