I’m looking for recommendations for sushi. I like SONO, but they are spendy. Also liked Sushi Thai over near lake boone trail, but since they changed their menu and raised their prices, it’s off of my list. Where are some good sushi places that you like?

Emmie and I are big fans of Shiki Sushi, over near Southpoint mall. They have all kinds of interesting rolls, which are 2-for-1 every day. We used to love Waraji, but went back a couple weeks ago and found them expensive and the quality merely OK. Don't know if we just caught them on a bad night or if Shiki has spoiled us...

Another vote for Shiki, but it's also only 3 miles from home.

Check the closest bait shop. In Tennessee raw fish is called bait!

Waraji, Shaba Shabu (holly park shopping center), Champa ( Brier creek), Kanki (surprisingly good), Kashin (crossroads).

All are on the sushi rotation for us.

I would add TASU (Brierdale across Lumley from Brier Creek) and Mt Fuji (Brightleaf Square in Durham) to the lists.

Also, for a different atmosphere than the typical sushi joint but still good sushi try Sushi Blues on Glenwood South.

I haven't tried TASU yet. I'll have to try it soon.

One more tidbit. Kanki has buy one get one sushi rolls at all their restraunts. It makes sushi night a little easier.

TASU is buy one, get one free all the time. Rolls range from around $7 - $15 so its not like "dollar sushi" . Reasonable enough draft beer selection too ..Apparently TASU is owned by the same guy that owns Shiki Sushi in Durham.

Asuka in Cary also offers buy-one-get-one-free on all rolls all the time, and they have really fresh and large variety of interesting rolls. I've always been more a fan of nigiri sushi over rolls, but Asuka's rolls are so good they've moved to the top of my list.

I also really liked Waraji when I lived close enough to go there, but I haven't in at least 10 years.

+1 for Asuka, it is by far my favorite place around here, been there dozens of times. The 2 for 1 rolls put it on our work lunch rotation. Second favorite is Sushi Tsune on the corner of Hillsborough and Gorman St right next to Arby's. Is more traditional than Asuka, high quality ingredients as well.

Laura and I had a really bad experience at Shiki in Durham. They put us at a table that could see partially into the kitchen. Then we watched them spill assorted things in the kitchen throughout the night, use dirty napkins to clean it up then leave the napkins on the floor just walking over them for the rest of the night. Service was horrible as well, it seemed busy but not particularly slammed. The sushi was decent but between the service and questionable cleanliness in the kitchen we usually head to Asuka or Sushi Tsune depending on where we are.

I also did the 2 for 1 at Sushi Blues and wasn't terribly impressed at the quality of the rolls. They tasted a bit off and didn't sit so well with me.

From the western side of town:

Asuka and Shiki are great. Sushi Thai also excellent.

Red Bowl and Yoho are good but not as good as the other 3, they are nice and close to home for me.

And if you're on a budget and not too discriminating, the dinner sushi buffet at Lee Garden in Apex is a deal at $9. Kids love the chinese buffet with pudding and jello :)

Yeah, I'd say that TASU now is the place to go for sushi in Briar Creek, they have a whole bunch of rolls to choose from and really good quality. When I go to Champa, I go for the Thai food, not the sushi.

Kashin is my favorite in Cary, not so crazy on the list of different kinds of rolls, but decent variety and really good quality. I haven't been there in awhile, but Paul used to be the main sushi chef there and he is a bit of a car guy too, so as a bonus you can talk cars with him some. Never could get him to come to an autocross though he has had several cars with very good autocross potential.
