I own a 00' TL, and don't have much to add to this thread. However, if you decided to look at TL's I would recommend a manual and I never got a clear picture the auto transmission problems were resolved from the older models (99-03). I believe the 04s were available with a 6spd manual and would probably be a safe bet as others mentioned.

Hmmm, I thought the TL 6spds had problems? The lady who shot my wedding said her 06 6spd TL was grinding 3rd (and she drove us to a few engagement sessions and she drives very very easily on that gear box) and there is a TSB and she got the tranny rebuilt for no cost?

Re TL 6 speeds - some of them have issues w/ the 3rd gear syncros. I have a friend with a TL type S who has some mild issues, but not enough for them to replace the whole trans.

We have an '08 TSX (with an auto) in the family for the last year and a half and love it. With the auto, it's not as zippy as the manuals, but it's just fine for my wife. Love the interior, drives darn well bone stock, and gets up to 34mpg on a 90% highway tank. Trunk is decent sized, and backseat is pretty decent too.

If you do all your own maitenence, that's great, but check the dealers if you don't. We would probably still be driving an Infiniti if it weren't for the local dealer. We thought the cars were great, and felt that the service outside the Raleigh area was exceptional.

Might be a car specific problem. And driving soo easy might mean extra effort from the synchros.

I had an '04 TL manual. I traded it in '07 after 60k+ miles and it never gave me any problems with anything. I even took it to both the track and auto-x courses several times.

Can't help it, I'm a honda fanboy.

Yeah from a few minutes of searching it seems that this problem is far and wide a hit or miss....no middle ground. Probably the 'voice of the vocal minority' phenomenon. Someone was asking about the transmission issues and a TL-S owner said he has been banging gears for 100k miles with no problems :). Is the TL 6spd a cable actuated or linkage transmission?

you know she said she wanted that skyline she saw at walmart, tell her to get a second job and get her one of those

as sad as it is I just dont see her being a particular type of car person. i know she hated it but the galant was a good car. What about a new tdi golf or somethng like that. At least with a vw you got your old student that works at the dealer ship.

she doesn't want another VW (even though I included the A4 in there) because of all the nagging problems with her bug)

I forgot about the Skyline comment, yeah she can keep dreaming.
