We got a "Fiskars" brand barrel from the Depot last year. It really seemed to be the easy button to me. Price was in line with other offerings (not cheap).

You do need to cut your gutter, and they are absolutely NOT mosquito proof (we treat the water). We liked it enough that we bought a second one.

I bought 6 pickle barrels (55-60 gallon I think) last year and converted them myself and sold 4 of them. If you find the barrels, I spent about $8 on hardware and screen material. Cost me less than $40 for each.

Right now I have a two tier. The upper tier has an open top with window screen on it. and a single male thread coupler on the bottom. The next tier has a male coupler at the bottom too that is connected by a chunk of hose I cut up and put female couplers on. Also on the bottom is a host bib/spigot. On the top is a male coupler for over flow routing.

I don't get any bugs because I throw gold fish in there :).

Got 2 of these, like them a lot. Haven't had them long enough to talk mosquitos. I put a mesh "plug" into the top of the gutter downtube to limit how many leaves and pinestraw clog up the top

I got two a couple of years ago from the Ag Center here in Pitt County. Call them and see if they still sell them. I think a paid about $50.00 each. They came with screens, a water faucet, and over flow tube. All the water drains out of mine.

I'll show you mine the next time you are here. I use mine to slowly water some ground cover that doesn't get much rain because of trees. I use a soaker hose to slow the release of water.

That's a great price at $50 per. I set up my rain barrel about 2 years ago. I bought an old liquid soap barrel from majestic solutions for near nothing and bought all the hardware from agri-supply. I had right at $40 invested in mine. I've use it to water plants and wash the car. You'll need to mount it fairly high up to get any kind of head pressure if you wash the car w/ it. Mine is mounted on 3 cinder blocks on the deck. That puts it about 4ft above the roof line of the car and pressure is very low, but I can get enough water on the roof to rinse it.

I'd actually like to get a second barrel and pair them. Oh as for bugs and 'skeeters, I placed some gutter cover over the top slot of the barrel. Keeps all the bugs and trash out via the screen and lets the water in. Works fairly well.

I cleaned mine out a few weeks ago and it has been dry since. Suffice it to say, today it took probably 35 minutes to fill ~110 gallons :). My overflow is spewing water as I type.

Mine is still at Sam's. You know what they say about good intentions.
