I will go in Germany in June, actually I should be there right now, I was suppose to flight last Friday but only make it to Philadelphia.
I was going to be at the Ring this coming Sunday driving a 996. but I had to cancel everything. I was able to reschedule my company training in June.
So I check again with the company where I rent the car to go on the Ring and they have 2 interesting cars available, the 996 and BMW M3 E46

So which one would you guy's choose?

M3 appears to be the SMG where the 996 is a traditional manual gearbox.

Even if they were both manuals, I would still take a 996 911. - AB

Edit: That Scirocco does look cool, but wouldn't be on my list.

That looks interesting, but in my limited look at the site I had trouble distinguishing between the rates on this page http://www.rent-racecar.de/english/vehicles-prices/index.htm versus what is shown on this one: http://www.rent-racecar.de/english/events-coupon/index.htm

Thanks for the link as we might be over there sometime this summer.

Slightly off-topic, but do you have any good links for rental cars in Germany? I'm thinking not a typical big-rental-car-company type of rental, but something like an Audi S4/BMW M3 sedan type of rental for ~5-7 days for travel in Germany. I'm curious if such is available and how much it costs.

Chuck

One is a package everything include, gas etc, with 4 laps ticket but its only for 2 hours....
The other one you have the car for either 4 hrs or the day, but nothing included ( gas and laps ticket ).
When I happened to go twice in Germany 2 years ago I rented the TT on each of these trip.
I did a 4hrs the first time and did 8 laps but had to pay extra for the additional km. A lap is about 20km.
The second time I rented for the day expecting to to do at least 10 laps. but on that day the track open up late because they
had a diesel spill from a race car the previous day. The late opening made up for an awful lot of car on track. After the lap you had to wait a few
minutes to just get off the track. So I ended up doing 8 laps again.
I will rent again for 1 day that give more time and km available.

But you didn't answer the question, which car would you choose?

About normal rental since I always went for business I have to used the prefer vendor of the company, it is now National.
Avis is having the Porsche Panamera for rental. http://www.avis.de/Panamera

I would choose either the E46 M3 or the E92 M3. The 996 sounds interesting, but for me, I'm not "up" on driving a car with all that mass out the tail end. I've spent a fair amount of seat time in a 996 sitting in the garage right now, and I can say for sure that I would need a LOT of time to get used to it. As for you Patrice, with all your experience in a similar car, such would not be a concern.

It would be interesting to see what price the E92 has. Also, if I was trying to keep the budget low, I would not have a hesitation about renting the E90 330i either.

Just be careful with rental car contracts. Many of the ones from traditional rental companies specify in their contracts that they don't cover the Ring.

True, but most of the main stream ones like Turtle and Europecar, Hertz and the like have the clause in their agreements.

Since there is no stellar argument in favor of the M3 I will stick with my first choice the 996.
I should be at the Ring June 13, except if there is another volcano to cancel my trip again.....
