wait a sec...gotta throw my flag on that Ghia. That's a cool car, even cooler when it's been slammed and swapped with a hot Scat motor. Ditto on Rodney's TR6, although it's listed in both his good and bad list (I get the whole love-hate relationship with LBCs, however). You really consider those cars automotive skeletons-in-the-closet?

My first car was actually fairly decent, '83 200SX though it was two tone brown and copper, it was loaded with every option, low mileage and clean and was only 6 years old in '89 when I got my license. It lasted about 9 months delivering pizzas before I ran a stop sign and got t-boned by a Lincoln Towncar. I had made an arrangement with my parents that they would get the loan to buy the car and I would make the payments. Unfortunately they also added me to their insurance and only put liability on the car so I was stuck making loan payments for the next two years or so on a totaled pile of twisted metal in the yard. I did recoup a little money parting some things out (much more difficult proposition before the intarweb), but spent the next 1.5 years driving whatever $250 car I could find. This was the first:

Image

Yes, you could access the hatch area through the hole ripped in the fender. The rear bumper was attached to the car with telephone wire. Every couple days I had to pull the #4 spark plug and clean it for the car to run on all four cylinders. The two speed "Hondamatic" transmission was pretty sweet though.

Eventually, my stepfather who felt some guilt I think for the whole insurance situation on the 200SX since it was he that set things up with the insurance and loan, I didn't really understand anything about car insurance at the time I just wanted to drive. He bought this from a co-worker $500:

Image

He gave me the Mustang with a couple conditions, the most ironic of which was that I had to cut off this glorious mullet:

Image

Though the Mustang was only 5 years old at the time, the first owner had given it hell for five years, it had 115K miles on it, most every body panel was dented as the woman had apparently hit many thing with the car over the years, the headliner was falling down and would leave many bits in your hair any time you drove it, the clutch slipped, parking brake didn't work, lots of electrical gremlins, simply would not start if it was below 50 degrees outside, and would drain a freshly charged battery to death overnight if left attached so I had to disconnect the battery if I was going to park it for more than a couple hours. Oh yeah, and of course it was a four banger.

There were a couple other short lived crap boxes at the time, but I never bothered to take pictures of them and these two were the ones I drove most in high school.

Then I went in the Air Force and had a few extra dollars to spend so I redeemed myself with this bitchin ride:

Image

Yes, that is gold chrome and I applied it myself by hand on purpose. It was a sweet car, but my decorative tastes came up a bit short there. I did eventually come to my senses and take all that off. Oh, and did I mention I bought that black car in Phoenix AZ in the winter and the A/C seemed to work when I bought it, however the first time I tried to use it in the spring there was an electrical short somewhere in the dashboard that killed the automatic climate control? That was a fun summer when I found out the repair bill was going to be $800. I did not have $800 so I sweated a lot that summer and saved every extra penny until I had enough to have it repaired the following winter. I looked pretty cool though and loved that Supra to death.

My first car was a 1972 Buick Skylark that was previously beaten to death and had no balls. But I thought it was fast. Could lay rubber if I was making a hard right hand turn and had a bald tire in the right rear. I used clamps and a beer can to cover an exhaust crack (and replaced the beer can every 3 weeks or so). My first new car was a 1991 Olds Quad 442. It was actually a fun car to drive. This one could burn rubber since it was FWD :)

Did it have the W-41 code engine?

I had the LG40 (I think that was the code). It had 10 less HP than the W-41.

Cool thread, got me thinking about some of the earlier cars I owned.

My first car was a '71 Ford Econoline van that my parents gave to me and my older brother to share in 1980. As soon as I got my license I bought out his share - I needed a van to haul my 1980 Suzuki RM125 to motocross races and my brother wanted something else, which ended up being a 1967 Mustang (unfortunately, w/6 cyl engine). The van had a 3 speed manual on the column that had like a 2 ft. throw between gears - you could practically recite the alphabet during the time it took to shift from 1st to 2nd. Most of the engine was accessed from inside the van by popping a few clips to remove a large cowl from the floor & underside of dashboard.

Image

A few years later I sold my motorcycle and stopped racing, then sold the van and bought a redneck hot rod, a 1974 Pontiac Formula 400.

Image

My Formula was actually bright blue w/blue & white stripes down the sides and the big Trans-Am bird graphic on the hood. It had chrome Keystone wheels with narrow front / fat rear tires like in the photo above and even had a set of those anti-hop bar things mounted to the underside of the rear leaf springs. Although it had a 400 cu. in. engine, stock engine produced a measley 225 HP, the trend for most big V-8 engines in the mid-70's, and the tall geared automatic tranny & diff combo didn't help the situation. I installed a Holley 4 barrel carb and intake manifold, headers, full 4" dual exhaust w/"turbo" mufflers, and decent cam, which livened it up a bit. Also installed a stall converter to help get it off the line, but it didn't work right so was removed pretty quickly. After owning it for 5 years, the Formula ended up being totalled when I was hit from behind at a stoplight by a 16 year old girl driving her dad's car. I replaced it temporarily with a 1986 Mustang GT, only until a local guy finally agreed to sell me his black 1980 L-82 Corvette:

Image

The L-82 was supposedly the hottest Corvette of the timeframe, but it was really weak with only 235 HP from a small block 350. It also had a tall geared automatic tranny that would downshift anytime you gave it the slightest bit of extra throttle. The thing I remember most about that car was how impossible it was to change the spark plug nearest the firewall on the driver's side.

I also bought an ill-running 1984 Mustang GT for dirt cheap during the time I had the Vette. That GT always had something major wrong with it - lots of design problems. I hated that car. It had metric sized wheels that only one brand/size of tire fit - I ended up replacing them with 15" OEM wheels from a later model GT.

Hell yeah it does. I only wish I had one as a yoot. I wonder if Mike will see any Kentucky Waterfalls that glorious on his trip to pick up the S2K tomorrow.

I definitely cannot picture Keith in a screaming chicken. I would have thought he was born in a BMW!

FYI Keith, those "anti-hop bar things" were called traction bars. They were the poor man's attempt to prevent axle wrap upon launch.

My first car was a 1967 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon which looked identical to this one. It had a V8 engine that drank gas as fast as I could make money in 1979. You could get eight high school kids in it by putting up the seats in the back, or six if you sat three across on the generous bench seats, with room left over for guitars, amps and drums.

The only thing I remember is the dash was made out of a squishy foam material that made a satisfying thud when hit with a drum stick, so one could play drums along with the radio while driving. By the time I finished HS the dash had been pummeled into a sticky, cracked mess.

I submit without comment:

Sold because it sucked

And a few less-embarrassing ones:

Traded in (for the Saturn - oh the shame....)

All family hand-me-downs except the GTI and the Saturn

Oh. No. I still like the Ghia. Just saying that my first car wasn't the Ford.

Here's my first car, a 1.0 liter Suzuki three cylinder Chevy Sprint which was the predecessor to the Geo Metro line:

Image

This thing was slow as hell but sipped fuel getting about 45 mpg's and really made you a safe driver because if your timing wasn't right, you'd pretty much be run over by oncoming traffic!

I had a roof rack system that I literally drilled into the roof which often carried plywood, pvc, portable skateboard ramps, you name it. I think I bought the car for $800 in 1995 (book value at the time) from my mom.

It hauled around about $5k worth of stereo from the likes of PPI, Alpine, A/D/S/ and Kicker. Alarm system? Phew!! Hell, not even AC.
