More details about my two bad cars:

1960 Studebaker Lark. I knew NOTHING about cars an a trustworthy mechanic found the Lark for about $400. About all I can say positive about it is that the steering was MUCH better than a Rambler equivalent that I drove at work.

It had some sort of carb issue that caused me to get a replacement from the Sears Catalog Warehouse that I worked next to in Seattle. The first try was spring loaded wide open! Fortunately I was able to return it and kept ordering replacements until one that was spring loaded closed showed up.

Another issue was it got so gutless that it would not climb a steep hill near my house in first gear of the auto. Fortunately there were alternate flatter routes.

It had a major starting problem where despite high cranking speed from the starter the only way to start it was to get someone to tow me in gear (autos would do that then).

Since this was about 45 years ago, I don't remember all the other problems.

Finally traded it in for a brand new Toyota Corona in 1966 at the FORMER Studebaker dealer. 1966 was the first year for "real" Toyotas in the US.

My 1974 Vega GT was ordered due to the first (1973) gas crisis. Remember gas lines? I sold my 1969 Mustang GT. The Vega was special ordered with all the "right stuff" (I was an avid car guy by then even though I still knew very little.)

The Vega experience started off badly when the dealer had a heck of a time getting even close to delivery ready. While waiting I read the owner's manual and found out that chains wouldn't work on the GT size tires. Not good since I was into ski trips to the Sierras at that time (I lived in San Jose, CA). Funny, the sales brochures showed lots of ski trip photos . . . which turned out to be with non GT cars. Bought Cable chains for when the mandatory cable use signs were up. Car actually did well in the snow with stock tires and NO power at high altitudes (or even sea level)

Car was a 4 speed . . . geared like a 5 spd with no first gear. Lots of fun on San Francisco hills.

Dash had water spots when delivered. Turned out the driver's door window frame was a POOR fit to the body. Dealer literally bent the frame to adjust.

Car had a funny cricket noise from the hatch area. Months of investigation, finally with me in the back while someone else drove, with the trim off allowed me to find the noise by literally feeling the metal. The metal was flexing/popping like an oilcan noise. Got a hammer, dented the offending area. Noise gone.

The Calif version of the GT was stuck with a one barrel carb with NO throttle response in neutral so double clutching and rev matching were a slow process.

Started to shop for a SPORTS car to supplement the Vega. Looked at used XKE's and Lotus Elans (one Elan guy warned me about the maintanance issues!), 1966 Shelby GT350 (drove like a TRUCK compared to my previous 69 Mustang), new Opel GT's, BMW's, etc. and just couldn't find anything that excited me that "practical" me could afford.

Took the Vega to a Bob Bondurant 3 day school at Sears Point. Used the Vega for 2 days and wore the outside front tire edges a LOT (talked to the subsequent owner who bought it from the dealer and told her why the tires were so worn). Drove a modified 240Z for the 3rd day. Drove it so much that it went through a full tank of gas!!!

Shopped used 240Z's the next day. Bought the 260Z a few days after that.

Ah, so a "notchback" instead. That pic I posted up above is probably one of the fastest B210s in existence back in the day. The picture is from the front straight at Road Atlanta at the Walter Mitty in 1982. Turbo Tom of Atlanta boosted that thing to incredible levels, and it was the daily driver for Nancy, his partner/gf. Tom was one of the early pioneers of custom turbo kits, and he created and had manufactured some pretty neat parts for Datsuns, mainly 240/260/280Zs. I had him build a hot motor for a V6 Capri back in the late 70's. About 5 years ago I found him through his web site, and he was into kit airplanes, turbo engines for them, etc. We exchanged emails and were hoping to meet up again one day. Two weeks later I saw that he was tragically killed on I-285 in Atlanta along with a passenger in his MR2.

Dick might remember Turbo Toms from back then. He built some incredible Z-cars: custom turbo exhaust manifold, custom log-type intake manifold, pressurized water injection tanks, large double pumper Holley 4bbl suck-through designs, etc., all in the days when fuel injection was not yet able to handle such an engine. His turbo 510 was beyond comprehension at the time. :)

I'm not sure I can remember all the cars and trucks I have driven, but I'll try. Top speeds listed if I remember. Some of those speeds were verified by the Tennessee Highway Patrol!

Parent's cars.
1966 Ford Sation wagon 110 mph
1968 Plymouth Fury III - big back seat 115 mph
1970 Chevy Impala 350/350 HP open dif It would leave one loooong black mark! Drum brakes - should have died. 130 mph
1971 Mercury Capri 1.6 115 mph

Brother's car I drove some
1968 Super Bee 383 130 mph or so but it would peg the speedo.

My cars
1969 Datsun Roadster 2000 very fast. I should have died in it. Wish I still had it 130

1988 IROC Z sold to pay divorce attorney and still pissed about it! 140
1980 Honda Civic POS sold
1966 Chevy 1 Ton flatbed - I still have it 65mph!
1983 Olds Delta 88 Convertible 455 really cool! sold to buy Camaro
1969 Mustang fastback to restore - sold to buy Camaro

Where I went to college (St Louis and Seattle) AC wasn't important. When I needed to cool off when my room in St. Louis was too hot, I used the Honda 50 . . . Winter was NO fun. Think gloved hands (both) behind the windshield with the throttle stuck wide open for a minute or two (35 mph max) until it vibrated closed. Repeat.

Our 200SX was my first AC car when we lived in the San Jose area. Added the factory/port kit after learning it didn't flow fresh air anything like the 260Z.

You should try a 1973 Lotus Europa (my wife's) in 112 degree (literally) heat in Barstow, CA. The air from the dash vents was too hot to blow directly on skin! Car did NOT overheat.

When we moved here part of the motivation to replace the Z was the desire for AC. 5.0 Mustangs had really great AC!

FYI my next car is hopefully going to be a 2011 or 2012 Mustang GT. My wife says sixes are for sissy's . . .    Even if they have more power than any of our current or past V8's.

She keeps looking for something smaller and more practical than the 97 Mustang GT. Hard to find something to compete with her history of Big Bad Orange Javelin, Sunbeam Tigers (yes 2 including a road race Tiger), Early Cougar, Lotus Europa, Mustang GT, etc.

The new 5.0 engine looks like a masterpiece to me...very impressive and some early reports are that it is putting down 375-390whp so is underrated. I'm a bit keen on the idea of a 2011 GT myself...assuming it would be F-stock legal which I assume it will be?

The last time I drove a Mustang was in 1975-76  when I spent a lot of wheel time in a 1968 Shelby GT500KR vert. I had a friend in high school who bought it for less than $4k in the peak of the gas and no-leaded-fuel crisis. His dad used to run a classic car restoration business in Atlanta. Anyway, that thing was extremely crude although very fast for the time period.

1984 Ford Escort. Would get passed going up hills.... by semi's.
1984ish Ford Escort - providing a supply of parts for above. Sold both for $300
<<married into a GM-discount family>>
1998 Chevy Cavalier 5sp - bought new - Traded in within a year for ->
1999 (or 2000, does it matter?) Saturn SL2 Homecoming Edition - needed an auto for Malia (knee problems) - we actually liked this car as a small 4-door around town. It had a decent well built feeling. Traded this in for ->
2001 (or 2002?) Saturn SC2 - wanted something "sporty" - regretted buying this immediately - felt much less refined than the previous car in all ways. Sold this to Carmax within a year.

Try driving THIS and then tell me what kinda man you are

At least mine was white ... and you CAN fit 8 full size drunk adults in it (but when doing so, it becomes less of a stealth drunk taxi and more of a cop magnet on Franklin street.)
