Dick, that was great timing. I was there from Sept of 67 to May of 68, and again in 69 thruogh 70 until we were withdrawn. I do remember the army aircraft with all the antenae I seem to recall some Mohawks at DaNang also. Can't remember what side of the field you all were on. I did however spend more than a few days at China Beach with a group of friends from the 95th Evac hospital. And just for info purposes the rocket attacks were worse on the withdrawl than they were at Tet. Its unusual to run across a Viet Nam vet in this group. Be well Brother
Bernie,
You be well also! Too many folks were evac'd including the flatbed trailer loads of caskets I would see far too often. Mostly Marines probably from DaNang.
Thanks to you and the rest of the Marines for taking care of me while I was there. My unit was on the "Marine side" of the base. I forget the compass directions. When I arrived we were in OLD white buildings near a big chopper hanger. Then we built a wooden, etc. hanger near the end of the runway directly across from the AF bomb dump. Our ops unit when we relocated was a quonset hut on about a 3 foot concrete wall. I knew it got worse during the withdrawal. I think my unit moved to somewhere "less nice". When I first arrived we lived in "villas" (aka DUMPS) just off the base. Then we got real barracks on base which we then built rooms and ceilings in. I got to China Beach once as I recall. Lots of PX runs, of course. My unit's aircraft were U8's and a couple of Otters. No Mohawks when I was there. I got to see U8's at a museum at Forbes Field one year at Nats.
