I have a neighbor who is literally 100 years old, up until a few years ago he would creep out of his driveway with his pristine fox body GT and go down the road at 15mph. It now stays in the garage, I think he is in a nursing home. I keep waiting for the white wreath on the door.

Here's a nice FAQ

http://www.unitedbimmer.com/kb-e36-comm ... ts-faq.php

Reading this made me choose E30 over E36. YMMV
Damn Steve...nice find. I don't think I'll ever buy an e36 now :). The list would have been shorter for things that are GOOD about the model :).

How have the e46s done in correcting that list of faults? I know double vanos is hard on oil, but I haven't heard too many suspension issues on the e46 other than the infamous outer balljoint on the LCA shearing off....does BMWCCA require the LCAs to be replaced every 3 years or so?

hmmn good about an E36? oh yeah, it'll whoop the ass of anything else on the prospective list on any road course in the country. 8)

but i might be slightly biased.

Steve,

Not implying that E36s are bad--sorry if that came across that way. Just noting that in that price range the list of possible problems is long and potentially expensive.

On balance though, I agree that it's the better platform given the supplied list of alternatives

That is an excellent list. The reason such a good list exists is because a LOT of people own, care for, and race E36 BMWs. I have owned and worked on a lot of cars (including 2 E30's, 2 E36's, and 1 E46), and the E36 chassis is right smack dab in the middle of the range in terms of reliability and maintenance needs, IMO.

I am sure if there were as many enthusiasts out there DIYing and documenting just about any 20 year old car platform, a similar list could be generated. I'd suspect a GOOD list like this for E30s would be just as long and probably longer. For E39, twice the length. Miata? Maybe 1/2 as many issues, mostly because it's a simpler car.
