Thanks Mike. I've contacted a few local Attorneys. Trying to find Duke grads to see if they'll give me the Alumni discount ;).

So I looked at my policy. My discounts include

Multi car discount (shouldn't be affected)
New car discount (shouldn't be affected)
DRL/Security system (shouldn't be affected)
Premier Driver Discount (might be)

Premier Driver Discount: A discount for policies that have a good claims and driving record history. The named insured must have more than 5 years of driving experience.....(I have 11 years and no infractions ever)

That discount on the WRX (not sure if my ticket would affect my wife on the Accord) is $21.10 ever 6 months, so I'd lose $120 over 3 years. I'm not sure if I'll find a lawyer that cheap, but I'll keep it in mind.

You should probably call your agent to make sure what the ramifications are.

What are the best practices for contacting the insurance company about this? Do I say 'Well I might get a conviction of 9 over which means no insurance points but I was wondering what other ramifications there may be?" or should I not leave the conviction up in the air, ie : "I am going to be convicted of a 9 over speeding ticket..." ?

I mean can they change my premium if they see that the charge was reduced even if there is no insurance points as a result?

Thanks

There's something to be said about receiving an involuntary donation to the Greensboro booster club (to the tune of 64 in a 55 written on the ticket) costing potentially more than a 55 in a 35 ticket.

dont forget about the law that says if you are doing anything over 70 in another state (regardless) that you can have your license suspended.

I almost lost mine for 73 in a 65 while I was in TN.

Also, dont forget that with a PJC, you are only allowed to have one per household. I added jessie to my insurance, both of us with PJC's and my insurance shot up a good bit.

Don't forget the equally fun "15 or more over 55 and lose your license for 30 days" as well as "two convictions in less than one year for ANYTHING over 55 and lose your license for 30 days." That last one bit me in the ass once. That was the one and only time I went to court without a lawyer. I didn't bother to actually LOOK UP that last ticket because I *thought* it was easily over a year prior (which was reduced to a 64 in a 55). The current ticket was, get this, 66 in a 55. Seriously. I got pulled for that at 2am out on a country 2 lane highway. I was driving perfectly straight, hadn't had anything to drink, and the best part? I'm the nicest guy an officer can pull over. Seriously. I was polite, gave no problems, and he had no reason to believe anything else was going on. Yet he wrote me for 66 in a 55. *sigh*

So I go to court thinking this is a no-brainer to get reduced on my own. WRONG. I plead not-guilty when called. The judge said "had any tickets in the last year?" I didn't think I had any, so I answered no. Figured I was golden at that point. He then asked if I had any in the last two years. I said yes. Blam. Gavel down, guilty, NEXT. Holy shit.

I figured "oh well. probably not that big of a deal." Wrong. I was less than a week out from being more than a year prior on that other ticket. The DMV computer flagged it and I got a letter to surrender my license for 30 days. No way around it.

So maybe I'm jaded on the "always lawyer up thing." *sigh*

That doesn't sound right. Bowie's lawyer (this was years ago) told me that this section in the NC statutes meant that the DMV would not record any points for 73/65 out-of-state. See the first sentence of paragraph 2 here: http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/enactedlegi ... 20-26.html Of course, I'm only the son of an attorney, not an attorney, so my legal advice is worth as much as it costs.

Anyway, I understand that in Durham an assistant DA handles routine traffic offenses, so if you choose to handle it yourself, that's who you will plead your case to, and if you hire an attorney, that's who he or she will negotiate with.

idk... maybe they changed it... but I had, might still have, a paper with the DMV trying to take my licnese for the speeding infraction. The hearings officer at the DMV in charlottea explained what he had the right to take it for (but he didnt).

But I also spoke with several lawyers and they said they can represent me and take my money, but none of them had any confidence

edit... It wasnt for the spead difference... it was because I was 3 mph over 70.

Good luck either way James.

Assuming you have a company with an actual agent, go ahead and call the agent, he wants to keep you happy and gets these calls all the time.

He said he has USAA. In my experience, there is no such thing as "hyothetical" with USAA.

Either it already happened, or you are telling them with no uncertainty that it will happen.

Needless to say, USAA could offer me free services and I would still shop elsewhere.

Oh, didn't see that. I would offer my opinion that USAA is a cult that sucks out peoples brains therefore not allowing their insureds to even entertain the thought of shopping for insurance but that would be unprofessional. They do have great customer service!

I have a friend who is an agent at Liberty Mutual and even with the Duke/UNC alum discounts that my wife and I would get and perfect driver discounts and multi car discount, an apples to apples policy was 60% more expensive with LM compared to USAA.

When I chatted with a few other insurers the closest I could get was within 20% of USAA's 6 month premium. I do have homeowner's insurance and scheduled jewelry insurances with them and a brokerage account. That might be why my premiums are so ridiculously low.
