Nissan confirmed this morning that its next-generation compact hatchback will bow at the Geneva Motor Show early next month. The car, which will replace the Micra, is expected to make the journey to North America, where it will go up against the likes of the Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta and Mazda Mazda2.

The new car will be the first to ride on Nissan’s all-new V platform, which will also underpin the next-generation Renault Clio. That platform was actually developed mainly for emerging markets because of its low cost, flexibility and ease of production A name has not been announced, although the Micra badge, which has been around since 1982 in some markets, could die. Nissan has long sought to overcome image issues with the Micra in many of its markets, where it is viewed as a dowdy and un-sporty small car.Nissan’s existing Micra (pictured) has been on the market since late 2003.

The automaker says that sales will kick off in Thailand next month before moving into the European market in the fall. North American sales are not expected until the 2012 model year. Production will move out of Europe to five locations across the globe.
