Both the wife and I have not been sleeping well over the last year or so and we’re thinking a new mattress may be in order. (insert jab comments about Rodney here 8) ). Has anyone tested/bought the new offerings like the foam mattress and the sleep by numbers bed? Considering you spend about ¼ of your life sleeping, investing in a good night’s sleep is not a bad thing.

Anyone have any comments on the new technologies?

my wife and I got a knock off Tempur-Pedic (I think the brand was "Sensus") off of ebay about 3 years ago and it has help up very well and is super comfy if you like soft beds. If you are a firm bed kinda guy, foam mattresses probably aren't for you. Its was about half the price of the comparable tempurpedic. The on I got was 8" urethane foam+4" visoelastic foam on top. We are very happy with it, especially since we could get a california king size (a must for my 6'5" frame). I think we paid ~$1000 for it including the foundation (they don't use a box spring), cheap bed frame, and shipping.

We have a sleep number bed as my wife has arthritis and we had an older mattress. It helps somewhat but is not a cure all. They are spensive but sometimes you can find them on craigs list. I like it and I don't get up with a backache anymore and I do adjust it depending upon how I feel.

Our dogs like it too, I think Wilson's number is a 65

We have used a basic "free flow" water mattress for decades. Simply replace the water bag and/or heater as needed. The advantage of being in California in the 70/80's :D

Fred's Beds carries various conventional, foam, and waterbed types for comparison.

Foam mattresses don't have to be soft- they're available in various densities. If you like a firmer bed, don't get the "pillow top" type. Foam is hypoallergenic and is supposed to be very resistant to sagging. We got a foam bed (pillow top) last year and like it. I don't recall the model or where we bought it but can check if you like.

All I can say is that we are done with inner-spring mattresses. Haven't really been happy with the durability of the last 2. We will be considering foam or sleep number soon...

Jeanne and I went through the process about 4 months ago. The sleep number is cool. But when they did all the sales and demo, our numbers were only 5 or so points away. It did not make sense to spend that kind of coin on it. I actually found their higher price models less comfortable. Plus they are not suited for side sleepers.

We looked into the foam ones. To get a nice one that was comfortable to both of us, it was more than the numbers bed. Those things really got expensive. But we both like the $10K one that you could raise your head and feet. Very nice bed.

I was partial to the Original Mattress Factory beds as that was my old mattress. So we visited there. But after being on some top of the mattresses and the foam, the OMF ones felt dated.

We settled on a nice semi pillow top one from the mattress store in Triangle Town Center annex (by Champs). They had the $10K foam bed. So the price was between the OMF and top of the line numbers bed.

The process took two weekends of looking and trying the beds. I recommend trying out the bed with your partner and spending no less than 10 minutes on ones that you are serious about. These things are not cheap and you will have them for many years...

With both shoulders having been separated and a broken pelvis, I am even comfortable on the new one.

Durability?

Forget it, I'm not touching that one.
