So we acquired a 32" HDTV for the bedroom (gotta start somewhere right?!) from my grandfather.

DishNetwork is coming this afternoon to switch out one receiver for their dual-tuner HD-DVR unit. External hard drive is on it's way from Amazon to expand the DVR's capacity to over 1TB (not sure what that means in terms of hours... the normal capacity for that unit is 55hrs of HD... and we LOVE our DVR, so I'm sure we'll need more.)

It's a dual-room unit, so I'll be able to send SD programming to my 35" beast in the other room (though sadly, only in 480i)... not sure if the recorded HD programming will be down-converted if I watch it in the other room, or if I won't be able to watch it in that room at all... we'll see. .

Now I just gotta figure out how to hook up the unit to my internet so I can use the remote access feature!!

At any rate... if there's still anyone contemplating making the switch to Dish... I can't recommend DishNetwork enough.

Damn you, I have a flyer sitting on my desk pondering it right now. I am so tired of Suddenlink.

I can give you or anyone else a referral if interested. Gets you a little more money off your first month or two!

Suddenlink is absolutely HORRIBLE! (At least the programming and hardware/software)

I'm also getting HBO & Showtime free for three months basically just for asking! Evidently, they didn't have my email address, so just for giving it to them they're giving me that little deal.

I have Dish Network HD and I'm very satisfied as well.

HD content will be down converted for your SDTV. I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to get connected online. The DLC and interface is horrible. You may need to be connected to avoid a service charge. I'm not sure if they still have that requirement or not. You will also have to pay $40 to activate the external HDD.

There is an older thread the Michael started a while back with lots of good info.

i like everything about Dish except the dang dvr. it's so NOT user friendly it's ridiculous. i've had cable and my dad has directtv, and both are far and above easier to use than the Dish DVR.

Then you are not using it properly... please explain what you think is not user friendly about it (and yes, I'll probably argue with you about it)

There is no way you can convince me that it is worse than TWC's DVR. Please tell us what is bothersome to you.

You know there is an iphone app that lets you control your dish box now? 8)

I've never used a DirectTV box, but I do like my dish box a whole lot more than TWCs.
