Perhaps I'm the last one to figure this out. I've Verizon and find their coverage to be great. Just found out that Straight Talk uses the Verizon network. Verizon: 750 minutes, no texting, no web access $50 per month.
Straight talk: 1000 minutes, 1000 texts, 30MB web downloads: $30 per month. If that's not enough an unlimited plan is $40.
Wal Mart carries the phones. Number porting took only about 4 hours (vs up to 7 days), no contract, auto renew minutes via credit card. And you can have the annoying "you have this many minutes left" when you start every call deleted.
Only downside? You have to buy another phone (unless perhaps you have one of the few Straight Talk supports) and the selection is limited. But they h=do have a couple basic phones, a couple mid range and one expensive (over $300) phone. I got the Samsung R451C.
I can't see any reason to not dump Verizon and go with Straight Talk.
