I thought there was a computer thread recenlty on here but can't find it so I'll start another.

1. iexplore.exe? What is this? part of windows internet explorer. it appears, at times is eating up all my power and speed. I am afraid to go with anything I see on google, etc.

2. If i switch to something like firefox what troubles will i have with other programs.

Cline,

Before the computer nerds wake up and give you real info

If iexplore.exe process is using up cpu, it is doing something. Whether a "stuck page" or some sort of malware/virus is busy. Or maybe a Windows or anti virus software or Adobe update is downloading. One of the "nerds" can tell you whether to empty the IE temp file.

Regarding Firefox. I have both IE 8 and Firefox. Since I'm a stuck in a rut guy (see new car thread  ) I use IE 8 the most at home and work. However, when IE 8 acts up or otherwise frustrates me, especially behind the firewall at work, Firefox can save the day. I might use Firefox more if I took the time to log into various websites, like THSCC from Firefox.

When I did some YouTube uploads IE8 didn't want to play so I used either Firefox or Google Chrome (Google owns Youtube I think).

Amazing to me how much faster everything works with Chrome. I have abandoned IE and FF on all my machines.

No real downsides IMO.

Dick,

Use FF and get a few Add-ons (free) from the Mozilla site, and you'll be extremely pleased with how it can be setup to your liking. These include Adblock Plus (helps block most ads, pages load much faster), BetterPrivacy, Flashblock (block auto loading of those stupid flash ads, click the icon over ad location if you want to see it), IE Tab (opens up an IE tab within Firefox for those sites that have to use IE), printPDF, Stop Autoplay and maybe Forecastfox.

Mike and Chuck,

Thanks! :)

Now, who is going to help Cline? :P

I assume his problem is more than just IE being a little slow. Sounds like something else is going on if it isn't just a download of legit upgrades for something. This assumes his computer is fairly robust.

I have been using (and loving) Chrome for awhile.

I have only two issues with Chrome. First, I have had a few pages that don't render correctly, so I have to revert back to IE or FF. Second, how they support the Adobe Flash plugin causes performance problems.

A good example is the WRAL weather page. Viewing that page via IE is no problem. But with Chrome, CPU skyrockets. I have Chrome on multiple PCs and all have this same issue. There are also people online who talk about this.

Cline,

iexplore is internet explorer, if you kill the process, all your internet explorer windows will go with it :)

By eating up all your power and speed, do you see the processor grinding away at a high % or is it just chewing up the memory? both of these can create the feelings you are describing.

as far as switching, switch away. 99.99999% of anything you do or use will be fine. at work I have one thing we do that requires ie as the Java handles it just right. on FF, it messes it up, but this is the rarety, lots of us nerds wont have any issues on a normal day to day operation.

How much memory do you have on the machine Cline? You can go out to a place like www.goldenram.com and use their upgrade detect or upgrade pro to figure out what is the maximum memory you can put on it. If you can add a bunch, things should speed up noticably. - AB

Based on the previous thread, I cleaned up my old desktop and added memory. The old thing had been something I only used if I had to now it is about 1000 times better, thats why I was now figuring out what the problem with IE was. I just downloaded Fire fox and it is like a new machine. I'm a convert and havent even figured anything out yet.

Gonna go ad some ad ons now. Thanks everybody!

+1. Until I decided to try Chrome, I thought I had a bandwidth problem. Turns out the problem was Firefox.

Use this to see what any unknown processes are and then move from there.

Also, it's difficult to give out advice when there's absolutely no information about what type of system you're running and which version of Windows.

worth is based upon how much non monetary value you place in the laptop. What your plan's are for the future with your laptop.

if your planing on replacing the laptop soon, then no. if you dont care, then keep in mind that for 300-500 bucks, you can go buy a brand new one with 100G of disk space, I would venture to guess memory would start off at 2gb. you would also end up with either vista or windows7 on the laptop as well.

Its truely your call. the 1-300 bucks for the new laptop might not be affordable... then again, buying a new laptop and donating the old one (ask again before you give it, or any other computer away for personal protection reasons) for the tax right off might be more ideal to you.

I'm pretty sure you can upgrade to 2G of RAM for less than $40. Is this a desktop or laptop?
