So I'm brewing up another cockeyed idea for some long term goals over the next 10 years. That said, I'm in search of a small enclosed trailer, 4x6 and not very tall. Just need something to carry my tires and tools in and keep them protected from the weather and secured at a hotel. The open trailer I have right now isn't going to work long term, although it's served me very well over the years. As soon as I can obtain an enclosed trailer, my open tire trailer will be for sale.

I've seen some new trailers at some very good prices, 1200-1300 for a new ones. Before I head down that road, wanted to ask if anyone had a used one for sale. The new ones I've looked at don't have any cleats where I can add hooks or shelves. I'll consider a 5x8, but that's starting to get too big for what I want to do, but if the price is right... I've started looking at CL over the last week, but the small trailers are being advertised by the trailer dealers, so they are all new.

If you see one for sale, let me know please.

You'll never find a trailer that small that's tall enough for you.

(Someone had to say it. )

What you want is the custom trailer that Ed Gelston commissioned in the early 90's. It held 8 Corvette tires and was low enough that it did not block the rear view from his '86 Corvette. It had a metal covered plywood body and weigh about a ton. Unfortunately, the body was prone to rot, and the last person that I recall owning it, Jack Hall, stripped off the body.

Yeah, I had looked for something like this, but in the retail trailer world it doesn't exist. I'll keep an eye out on for one though. I'm in no rush for this, but would like to have something by the end of the year.

1. You beat me to it.

2. Whilst, ( I sound smart using whilst) on the subject of trailers. I have committed to myself to get a trailer to tow my motorcycle when I have to go the mountains to see my FIL. It's seven minutes from phenomenal riding, I've got to take advantage of that even though it opens me up to the cries of "Trailer Queen" . So keep your eyes open and let me know.

How about spending about twice as much for something like this? http://www.superior-trailer.com/pre_own ... eh=3929575

That's cool, but not tall enough. Can't get my tires, possible spare tires/wheels, tools, popup and chairs in that. I will look at their site some more though. Thanks for the link.

Cline,
Even though I frown upon trailering a bike to a location to ride (especially if its in-state). I made this because I didn't want the hassle of a trailer. You can weld up one of these in a Saturday afternoon:

Works great and fits under the seat of the truck when not in use. Only downside is it takes two people (or an ATV jack) to hitch and unhitch. But unlike a trailer, people can't borrow it because the axle diameter and fork spacing is usually different from bike to bike.

That just looks so weird to me. I still need to check out your other contraption that mounts to the hitch.

Here is a bigger one for less money. It is a kit.

Or a pod type. http://hitchandtrailerguys.com/Trailer/ ... p210c69c84

For an open trailer to tow a motorcycle, the Ken-Don trailers are awesome. Not terribly cheap new, but if you cruise craigslist (and just search for "motorcycle trailer" and click everything to look at it to see since people sell this without even knowing what they have) you can find one for under $500.

That's what I did. I think mine was $400, but it did need a decent amount of TLC to make it look nice again (and a little welding to get the third leg working right again). But they fold up really nice for storage in your garage, which keeps you from needing to replace tires due to dry rot nearly as often. They tow and ride great thanks to the torsion bar axles.

There are single and dual bike models and I'd only buy the dual, personally, for resale and flexibility. The dual will haul a single bike just fine. I modified mine by adding an easy to remove 2" receiver hitch to I could put a 2 bicycle bike rack on it sideways and still haul one motorcycle, and it works great.

For Rodney, it's real shame nobody makes something like the U-haul "sport trailer" to sell. Those are popular with the One Lap crowd as they hold a LOT of stuff but are very low profile and aero and light. Don't know if you could get TWO full sets of tires in one, but it would be close. They hold more stuff than you'd think from the pics of them. But U-haul doesn't sell used trailers ever, and the manufacturer of those did an exclusive deal for U-haul, so they don't exist outside of being rented. :(

Both of those are cool options, but from a rain standpoint neither would be good.... Thanks for the ideas though....

That is similar in concept to the ex-Gelston trailer, perhaps a little smaller. You ought to drive over to Burlington and talk to them about what you need.
