Our first race will be the rallycross July 27th and the tires on our car look pretty old and maybe dry rotted. We figure any used tires will be better than the ones on the car now. We plan to run in class SU2 so looking for street tires. Not particular about brand, etc. Located in Durham but can travel to you. Thanks....

I looked at a lot of tires, looking for the most open tread patterns with not so many circumferential ribs (that make the ride quiet, but do nothing for forward traction). The two bets tread patterns were the Douglas tires at Walmart, and the Fusion at Pepboys. The reviews on the Douglas were awful for sidewall blistering so we bought Fusion. These have been pretty good. Not quite up to the Dunlop SP60's, but those are not available (at least in our size).

I see Fuzion tires at Tire Rack and a couple of independent dealers but not at Pep Boys. The one Fuzion tire that comes in 14 inch is the "Touring" tire - is that the one you bought? Thanks for your help...

Oops, it' the other "F-word"; it was Futura, not Fusion. I'm glad you asked, I seem to recall that the Fusion had lots of small sipes and no large voids. Our experience shows that small sipes clog with mud and don't grip as well as more open tread patterns. Lots of small sipes work well in snow, but we don 't raceuch on snow.

Thanks Charlie for the info about sipes, did not know that. And about choosing thicker sidewalls. We'll probably just buy whatever comes along at this point, keep it affordable, then look around. My goal is to get a little better with each race for the balance of the year, then see what happens for next season.

I have a set of 15" rims from an Escort GT along with Arizonian tires with a really nice tread pattern that are mounted on different rims.

I'd be willing to make you a deal on them- 15" rims have many more actual rally tire options available.

a guy on craigslist is selling 4x100 bolt 14" daisies from a miata with newish tires for $100. Might be worth looking into. I know the bolt pattern is the same, and the offset should be good as well. Biggest bonus other than decent tires is the 200 lbs weight savings over the steel wheels. Ok, maybe more like 15 lbs.

Hey thanks Turner. We're buying tires and rims from club member Brett Murphy, picking them up today. We're making progress on your old car, still on track for the rallycross at the end of the month.
