Our vw has one fan that works.. the other fan is busted , when we got her it was.Anyhow,she over heated last time out.The fan was working accordign to dad, running it over and over it was getting hot..Just letting me run, i would not experience it.We have a old nissan fan,nad wanna put a switch in and making the fan run..Hopefully the fans will keep her cool,we also think the coolant is boiled, so there is air in it.. we are gonna bleed it, because right now the temp gauge is not reading right.It has two sensors, right under the side of hte motor, near the front.We wonder if they are not working right..We have a new radiator in her, so i dont think that is it.the temp gauge works, os the sending unit is ok, we hope it is simply a fan issue, do water pumps in vw golfs malfunction at high rpm?

If there is air in the system a good pump can cavitate the water and cause some overheating. Also, a steam pocket (from having low pressure in the system) can cause a thermometer/stat to read crazy high. I think you'll know better after bleeding & burping the system.

Is the radiator cap new? Is the hose to the overflow bottle leaking and allowing the system to draw in air every time it cools down? I'm just throwing some stuff at you.. hopefully I'm not making the confusion worse.

I have an old '84 Vanagon that's been giving me cooling system fits for a while now.. so while I'm familiar with german cooling systems, I'm also frequently stumped by them.
