DOT mandates steel wheels are made from very think material. Racing steel wheels are thinner material and lighter. As long as you check the welds for cracks and don't bend them you are good to go.

we had some strong vw wheels, on our toyota. they were heavy, but were unbreakable. we want some more of those. they were off like a jetta or something.we knew they were vw, because they had the vw logo on them.

Despite the thicker steel, we had 3 wheels crack at the bolt circle on our old Toyota rally car. Of course in those days we had more than 3 drivers per event and we were always having novice drivers (and sometimes us too) doing extra punishing things to the wheels. Plowing/pushing in the dirt is a no-no for more than just de-beading tires. Once we switched to alloy wheels we never had another wheel problem. (Maybe due to the general improvement in our aggregate driving or just random chance, but enough to make us believers in stiffer alloy wheels.)

5 lug or 4 lug VW wheels? I have some 4 lug 14" and 15" wheels that will fit a VW.

The Subaru wheels I have are 5x100 15". If Michael C. doesn't want them (and it seems he does not) they may work on the VW. I'm in North Raleigh, maybe we could test fit them.

Thanks for the offer, but looks like the VW center bore is larger, 57.1mm vs 56.1mm for the Subie.

T. Hoff can machine the centerbore.

I used nested hole saws to increase centerbore before, and it worked well. For something that small, a Dremel might even work.

Yes, I'm really trying to sell this.
