Have S2000 prices gotten so high that a 165K mile car, which has been in an accident and will inevitably need a new clutch soon, can command $8K?

Are you telling me my car will also need a new clutch soon? :)

Maybe not. When I replaced the clutch in my former car, there were some hot spots on the pressure plate, but otherwise, we could have probably put in a new throwout bearing and simply reused what I already had.

But even so, I'd say that replacing a 165K mile original clutch in ANY car is something that should be budgeted for. S2000 or otherwise.

ditto this....

Just pulled the trigger on a new clutch kit on the mazda 3 as it was slipping in first at the last event.

You're probably right to err on the side of caution. Mine is at 175k, original clutch and shows no signs of slippage yet. I always rev match when daily driving and the only hard launches are on competition runs. It'll be interesting to see how long it does end up lasting at this rate... :)

Something had to have been wrong with it.

I second this, I was going to see what ended up lasting the longest, the motor or the clutch in the RX-8, I guess I'll never know....
