I know I told you before that I might be interested in it but since it will have to be my daily driver I will add some more $ and buy a new hot hatch for the added practicality.

As for the 996 make sure you have it check for the RMS and IMS, etc, but I guess you already know about this.
Personally I will look for 2002 and up.

Dang, I hope I have the same luck with mine. That was really quick. Was it someone local?

Guy drove up from Charlotte. Friend of a friend of a friend referral deal, he had been looking for a nice one and was ready to buy.

Mike,

From what I've seen over the past 12 months or so, prices on used 996s have really firmed up strongly (for decent cars). I've been particularly hunting 996 GT3s, and prices of those bottomed about a year ago or a bit more and have been appreciating since then somewhat (10% or so). Decent cars with low mileage are now very hard to find. Same thing with the 996 Turbos -- prices have firmed up strongly. It would have been easy to have bought a low-to-reasonable mileage 996 Turbo or GT3 12-18 months ago, driven it a good bit, and sell it today for the same or more than what you paid.

The same thing has been happening with some other German cars like the E39 M5 -- prices bottomed about 3 years ago, and for low mileage (60k or less), high quality examples, have appreciated 30% or more since then.

Definitely beware of IMS bearing issues on the non-turbo/non-GT3 engine 996s. The ceramic bearing upgrade is required if it hasn't been done already. None of these are cheap cars to maintain of course.

Good info Chuck, thanks. I have noticed the same thing -- seemed to be plenty of older ads from earlier this year for good cars in the low 20's, and a lot fewer now. I'm waffling between spending more (closer to 30k) on a nicer one, or bottom-feeding for something that needs some work.

As of tonight, I'm leaning towards a fixer upper higher mile car. One problem is that I seem to have talked myself into a Targa, which narrows the pool a bit.

This one out at the coast has a sketchy history (NY car, went through auction) and not a lot of the better options. I'm considering offering $22k or so:
http://norfolk.craigslist.org/ctd/3223886405.html

This one looks like a gem with the litronic headlamps, full leather, good history, and good maintenance, but more dinero:

I found this one earlier today and immediately started checking one-way airfare to WA :) Good thing it's already sold, fixed that conundrum for me. Very cool (IMO) color combination, full leather, sport seats (! very rare in a plain jane 996)
http://www.dupontregistry.com/autos/Sea ... id=1269667

Then there's this one which (if it's still around) is begging for a lowball offer. Color combo is unique, but not sure how it will sit with me over time. Listed an accident. If I was close by I'd walk in with a roll of 100's and offer $20k, would be worth the risk to me...

Ah, decisions, decisions. The empty bay in the garage right behind me is begging to be filled :)

I would pick this one from all those you listed. You may be able to negotiate it down a bit, but in the grand scheme of things, it's only slightly more expensive, and it appears to have had good care -- for cars like these, one want one where someone has poured money into through its life, given it whatever it needed when it needed it.

To give you an idea of how the 996 market has changed, back in the fall of 2009, Ash Gravely bought a 2004 40th anniversary edition 996 with something around 40k miles for $32k. He's put maybe 30k miles on it since then, and today, he could easily sell the car for well more than he paid for it. It's a special, numbered edition car (1964 models), has X51 engine package, MO3 suspension, etc, etc, so it's the most desirable normally aspirated "normal" 996.

Anyway, inflation (in dollar terms at least) has been working hard on these things the past few years. If you find the right car, buy it, close the deal. I've given up on the 6GT3 thoughts pretty much as the sweet spot seems to have been passed in that market.

Buy the lowest mileage best cared for example you can find, and then be prepared to spend more once you own it of course. :) Hey, at least DC Auto is nearby (and a pretty amazing place).

Well, I just put a deposit on a car, going to pick it up this afternoon from Wilmington.

But it's neither a 996 nor a 330i :) Muhahahaha

Steve, I think that translates to "No, their CEL's aren't bright enough."
