Don't tempt me to follow suit.

I can't for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is my bike is currently in quite the disassembled state getting upgrades. It's amazing how the "perfect bike" in the dual sport world can end up needing so many changes.

I love my G650X for so many reasons (single cylinder means it's light, fuel injection can't be had on many singles), but I ended up adding a small windscreen, digital tach, skid plate and engine protection, air shock from an X Challenge, 7 liter additional fuel tank, side luggage, and the 2x2 Cycles bicycle rack (for anyone that cares, that dude is local and will install for you). Plus a myriad of other small changes. *sigh* I think buying and modifying things is my real addiction. So when a bike like the one above is already "perfect", I can't pull the trigger. ;)

It's pretty good, but not perfect. Plenty of room for you to improve it. I don't any farkles on the handle bars like an I-phone mount or GPS. You could replace the seat. Add power adjustors to the windsheild. Maybe some ultralight wheels? The list is endless.

Or you could buy it and ride it while your other bike is in the garage.

Mine this weekend!

Breakfast at Mabry's Mill. Left Roanoke at 7 am and didn't see one car until about 2 miles from here.

Maybe we should start a poll and figure out some dates that might work.

Excellent idea, i've done that. I have my current bike because I never thought I would get my LT rebuilt after an accident. Not only got it rebuilt but sold of for almost what I bought if for 3 years earlier!

Back when I was VFR-man, I had a red VFR800 that I replaced with a yellow one a year later because I LOVED the yellow (it's faster, period) and yellow wasn't an option that first year. Then when I was on a ride with some buddies, including the guy who bought the red one. He was behind me in the mountains and I watched him in my mirrors ride it off a ledge when he chickened out in a corner. It was fairly low speed and the wreck basically only took out bodywork along with the front instrument cluster. Worst part was it wrecked the plugs on the wiring harness, too.

I bought the bike back from the buddy with the intent of making it a track bike.

I bought a few body panels off eBay, but couldn't find a tank. So I bought one from Canada, because at the time the exchange rates meant buying Honda parts from there was like 30% cheaper. I was going to have the entire bike painted, so I didn't care what color I was ordering.

It came in some kind of awesome color that seemed to change depending on the light. I loved it. So I decided to order all new plastic in THAT color, rebuild it, and sell the yellow bike. Problem with the "track bike" idea was that nobody was doing track parts for the VFR800 like they had been in the VFR750, which I didn't realize, so that idea was dumb from the outset.

Turns out that wiring harness was the worst part of the whole deal. I remain convinced that Honda hangs a wiring harness from the ceiling and builds the entire bike around it. I did not pull the motor to do the swap, but I swear that's probably the recommended service procedure. We wiggled shit in and around and through and somehow got it all installed, but it SUCKED ROCKS. The other thing I forgot about in ordering parts from Canada was the instrument cluster...it came in metric units. *sigh* The speedo just swaps the ring positions and makes KPH the more dominant ring, but MPH is still there, so that was no big deal. The annoying thing was the digital display had the temp in C and mileage and trip in kilometers. Plus it would have reset the mileage to zero. But as it turned out, while my LCD was busted, the circuit board behind it was not broken. So I actually was able to swap the circuit board to the original, which got me english units back *and* my mileage. There's really no central ECU in those bikes, just a digital dash that's standalone as well as a fuel injection ECU in the back. Handy.

It all ultimately went back together flawlessly. I sold the yellow bike, then rode the older one for a couple years before losing interest and selling it. I have no idea what happened to it, though, because a few months after I sold it, the guy I sold it to actually died in a motorcycle crash in the lower esses at VIR on his track bike (he did some amateur racing and track days). Pretty likely it's the only VFR800 in the country in that color, though, because that's not a color that was ever sold in the US, and I think was only sold in Canada for a year or two.
