So I finally bought a track car last night. I go back to pick it up tonight. It is a 93 Infiniti G20 that I got for $500. It needs two new fuel injectors, a passenger side axle and a lot of elbow grease to bring the paint back to life. It has the SR20DE engine with the 5 speed manual trans. I plan on getting it together and hopefully making one event by the end of the year after I run Nationals in the S2000. I am hoping it will be a good starter track car. There are plenty of parts available to do a decent track build you just need to know where to look. Here is a picture of the car as it sits.

So I assume it shares a lot of mechanicals with the SE-R? Does it have the viscous LSD?

Cosmetically, that's a pretty darn good looking $500 car, Keith. Congrats and good luck with the prep. As someone who is currently going through the prep of a cheaper, beater-type track car, I know how you feel...OK, Vincent is doing the lion's share of the prep, I'm just footing the bill and handing him wrenches 8)

I'm pretty sure that the viscous diff in the G20 was an option that came with the "touring" package. (my quick google search backs up that assumption)

Does the car have the dreaded 5th gear popout issue that happens with those transmissions?

Well right now it is only running on two cylinders thanks to two shorted out fuel injectors so I didn't romp on it in 5th to see if it pops out but the owner said she never had a problem with it. This car does not have the VLSD either since it is not a touring. It is a different platform with a different front suspension but the rear suspension is the same as the B13 Sentra. It has a multi-link front suspenion and a strut suspension in the rear.

It is a two owner car so I know basically all of the history to the car as well. I also found out that I can upgrade to the B15 SER Spec V Brembo brakes as they are a bolt on affair but then I would need to run 17's to clear the brakes.

It should be interesting.

That sounds odd. Usually, it's the other way around. :)

Normally it is but Nissan decided to do it backwards on this one for some reason.

unless he runs it on two cylinders and one axle he'd be cheating. and no one cheats on their lemons cars, that would be unsportsmanlike.

not entirely true Jason. selling parts counts against expenditures.

it ain't cheating untill you get caught. and we went thru two BS Inspections with only 10 laps assessed last year. 8)

very true, a loophole that i'm sure plenty of teams take advantage of. "hey, i sold the factory alloys to my brother for $200, but wheels don't count against you so i bought them back!"

and what are you saying, that you both cheated *and* got caught? :)

we actually got penalized one lap because we were $2.33 over the $500 limit. so much for honesty being the best policy. fortunately we got a fairly generous residual value thanks to our blown motor.

sorry for the hijack Keith.

no Jason, we didn't get caught cheating last year. we had an overheating problem and swapped radiators (used) on friday prior to tech. as such the judges determined we had put "value" into the car past the original build.

this spring we sailed thru tech with nary a second look. we won on gas mileage, no mechanical issues and clean driving. not to mention our fair share of good luck.

i would really hate to think a fellow Tarheeler would be disparaging our win. one would think sour grapes might be involved. 8)

thanks Wes, but we were clean. and should that car ever end up in another LeMons race it automatically carries a 200 lap penalty. the race is afterall, all in the name of fun.
