I have purchased a 2008 Mazda Miata (MX-5) with the power retractable hard top. Does this version of the miata require an additional roll bar for HPDEs or club track events, as long as the top is up and secured?
If additional information is needed, please let me know.

No.
We regard removable tops and power hard tops as convertibles, and as such they require the same 4-point roll-over protection as a rag-top. Why, you ask? Because they do not have a "B" pillar integral with the chassis to prevent collapse. This rule is applied to the earlier removable one-piece hardtops on Miatas as well.

Our only exception to this rule is the Porsche 987 factory roll bar which has been approved by SCCA. Earlier 986 models are also approved if they are augmented with the Brey-Krause roll bar extension.

Go here: http://www.thscc.com/timetrial/nonhtml/Tech_Guide.pdf and see our requirements on page 18 of the .pdf

What Brad meant to say was: Yes. For the reasons he already stated. :)

YES.
That's correct.
You gotta get a roll bar in that thing.

if i may Aaron. Chris will not only create something that will work for you Jason, but will provide you with a quality product at a competitive price. his work is very highly regarded by many in this area.

but, before you spend the money on a bar for the Miata, have you checked to see if you fit under a bar with your helmet on your head?

Has anyone seen a bar put in the new retractable top Miatas? I imagine it would involve much compromising.

I thought s2000s had a few options now like the Mugen Roll Bar, and hard dog.

The Mugen one wouldn't pass our tech. Here's a picture of it - it's kind of a goofy design.

Image

The other popular options - Cusco and Safety 21 - wouldn't work either. The rearward legs are curved.

Hard Dog does now offer one. And, I've seen one, installed, in person. The big problem is that to install it, you need to cut parts of the underbody of the car off. I'm not talking about drilling holes - I'm talking about removing metal. You also lose some seat adjustability and some interior storage space - both of which are already sparse in an S2000.

Hard Dog S2000 roll bar install instructions wrote:
39. From the rear wheel wells, cut the opening required for the front mount backing plates. The opening should start at the top forward end of the wheel well, ¾" from the vertical rib, and extend inward to the front corner where the front panel forms a corner and transitions to the inside part of the well. The opening should be 1" tall. Be careful not to damage the roof of the box exposed in the opening. This is the floor of the rear of the car.
40. Cut a slot in the top half of vertical sheet metal support exposed in the opening. Use the punched hole in the vertical metal support as a depth and height reference for the cut.

Which, I suppose, is fine - at least there's something available now. But, having cut up a nice, expensive street car once in my life already, I've vowed to never do it again.
