I'm looking into some nomex and fire suppression items. I'd like some advice about how deep I should go into saferacer with these goals in mind.\

-Not interested in wheel to wheel (except Lemons this year if we get selected), HPDE's and Lapping Days, along with the occasional TT.

Suit or no suit
Can I get away with a single layer jacket and pants with nomex underwear?

Fire bottle or extinguisher? how many pound?

Hans like device? jury is still out as there seems to be a bunch of alternatives coming on the market. I'm thinking of waiting another year on this.

I understand the importance of fire safety, as my work clothes are nomex, I understand that a mint can be spent on this stuff... I'd like to achieve a balance between safety and having money to pay to play..

thanks in advance for your advice

if you do Lemons this year you will be required to have nomex suit, gloves and shoes. also i believe Lemons will require H&N Restraint of some form beginning this year.

the organizers of Lemons had a deal with someone to sell a package which included helmet, suit, shoes and i think gloves and underwear.

check the THSCC track link for TT requirments. i believe a 2# extinguisher is the spec.

again, Jake. what is your personal safety worth to you?

a single layer suit will generally be less expensive, and serves a purpose. however, nomex underwear in combination would be better.

check with OG Racing they usually have suits on sale. i got a nice Simpson for half price this summer.

I've stopped going on track for any purpose without at a minimum a three layer Nomex suit, race shoes (low cut Piloti's do NOT count), gloves, socks, and underwear. Those last two I usually use Carbon-X or Carmyth (Sparco) stuff since they breathe better. I also use a Hans and won't go on track without it.

Have you seen pictures of Bowie's hit? While it was wheel to wheel racing, it just doesn't matter. Bad things happen on track, period. A basal skull fracture can kill you so easily with just a "wrong" impact in just about ANY car you'd want to have on track. Visit someone in a burn ward and you'll never consider going on track without fireproof gear, too, IMHO.

But maybe I'm just a big chicken...the least prep I'll really consider on track any more is roll bar, race seat(s), harnesses, and full gear. And in a high horsepower car like my Cayman, just having a bar doesn't thrill me.
