I'm still looking for someone to share a room. It would really make the wife happier.

She wants to make sure you don't get lonely? How sweet.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Careful Mike.

We have a tentative joint tolerance of each others habits. so let me amend that. It would make her wallet happier. After 11 years we're well beyond sweet. A dollar saved is a dollar I can burn at the track later.

I keed! I keed!! :) :)

Well, I left the M5 at home thankfully. I doubt I'm going to track it again even if I have now got it setup reasonably well as it is just too punishing on a car as nice as this one. (i.e. rocks, debris, etc).

Driving in the PCA black group was great. Point by anywhere the track is straight on either side. I wish more clubs had a solo group for very experienced drivers who don’t want to instruct any more but want a fun and relaxed weekend. Even with the shakeup going on in First Settlers, the event seemed to run pretty well (as long as you didn’t want a reply to any e-mail you sent to them before the event).

A big thanks to Brian Marks for the co-drive in his Euro motor E36 M3! What a blast. I've never driven an E36 M3 before (other than a test drive years ago in a stock car), so this was a nice way to start I suppose (full Bimmerworld cage, seats, harness, HANS, stock Euro 3.2 motor (sweet), Stoptech brakes, GC suspension (not sure of all the parts, but Clay helped him sort the spring rates, solid bushings, etc) that is perfectly dialed in. The car handled amazingly well. R888s worked well too with nice feedback and decent stick although they did get greasy in the afternoon Sunday (more on that later).

Having a G2X in the car was very nice with the sequential rev lights as I never had to pay attention to the tach since the rev lights catch your peripheral vision perfectly.

The car was setup so well that it would do whatever you asked of it. It had the most precise and controllable response to left foot braking of any car I've ever driven. The other part that I found wonderful was that I could do a rev matched downshift, and then still under trail braking easily slide my left foot onto the brake and then move my right to the throttle. This was especially useful in turn 1-2 on South as I had a virtual Ron Spencer talking to me. :)

Ron's advice showed up again for me in the corkscrew into tun 6. His programming in my brain of the straight line into an early 6 apex after rubbing the gators in 5 (which you almost straight line) was all I used all weekend. Left foot braking there is mandatory to make it work, but I enjoy it so much I can't even remember doing it the "old way". Using the on-camber first part of 6 to blast into rolling onto power worked real well.

I couldn't quite match Brian's times. He was running 1:20.1 area and the fastest time I turned was a 1:20.9. I was consistently in the 1:21.1-3 area, but my driving was not consistent as it is such a transition into this car. More seat time is needed.

The G2X is nice to have in car though. On Sunday in the first afternoon session, I was driving similar to earlier, but was about 1 sec off the pace from earlier in the day. I did a few more laps and realized it was all track/ambient temperature/whatever, but I wasn't going to be back consistently below 1:22. Hence I decided to back off the pace and work on my vision and feeling (i.e. Ross Bentley thought from the recent instructor seminar) since something seemed "up" with the conditions.

I pointed by a black E36 who seemed to be really pressing hard from behind, and then following him into Oak, looking at my line, I had this feeling he was taking a bizarre line and then noticed he was 4-wheels off but fortunately got it slowed down enough not to tire wall it. He did a great job using all the pavement and then going off in a controlled fashion.

Shortly thereafter I passed a 911 into 1 and on 2 exit something in the mirror catches my attention, and I see him getting super loose with the rear end in the grass. At this point, I'm glad that I've got virtual Ross working with me. A couple of laps later, the black flag appears everywhere. A Boxster lost it in 10 and hit the tire wall...hard, hard enough to wrap the right rear suspension under the car. It took VIR about 20 minutes to repair the tire wall.

I did get some in-car video on Saturday, so when time permits I might try to get some editing done as I want Ron to critique the 4-5-6 line I was trying.

Thanks again Brian for the co-drive! The car is incredible fun and handles better than anything I've ever driven on track. It was a great weekend with perfect weather too.

Good to know. The last time I ran with THSCC was in 2005 I think, and at that time it was run more like advanced with BMWCCA from what I recall. South course April 2005 I think it was. Brian will let me use his car, but CMP is way too far to drive that thing on the street. :) Just surviving the trip back from VIR was enough for this old fart. :(

It was great having as many THSCCers as we did. Aside from the entertainment I learned a great deal talking with Branscomb, Butler, Hall, Marks, Panciera and Remchak. I met a couple of great Tarheel BMW guys: Mitch & Sid.

More than ever before, I really felt like I was connecting with track, probing the RX-8's limits further and sensing what the chassis was doing. The week before Ron brought up maximizing weight management in turn 6 at the Rock and one my goals was to focus more on that.

After reviewing the lap times from both courses I was initially disappointed with my performance. I hoped to match my lap times from my previous track car (93 RX-7: 280 whp, coilovers, Toyo T1R street tires, but with less driver experience). The RX-7 would easily see over 140 mph on the straights, but I would keep at 140 or under. My stock RX-8 has just 230 hp at the crank and about 160 ft/lbs of torque and it (man I miss that turbo power) and shod with Azenis.

I was a couple of seconds slower in the RX-8, but playing the video from both cars side by side was fun. On South course I sand bagged the RX-7 at 140 mph. In the RX-8 I rarely noticed more than 115 mph foot to the floor and me trying to verbally motivate it. Just before braking for bitch the RX-7 is about a second & a half ahead, but I'm braking much later in the RX-8. That could be a result of carrying less speed, but the brakes do feel better in the RX-8.

Between Bitch & the spiral the RX-7 can stretch its legs there, but again I 'm braking much deep than before, but carrying about the same speed because in the 7 I had to feather the throttle because I'd run out of 3rd gear just before braking zone for turn 4. By the exit for turn 6, I'm dead even with former high horsepower pansy driving self. Of course that RX-7 would just power up and over the hill, but I'm carrying more speed through south bend not than I used to the old car.

Yeah I need data aq.

The experience level in white solo group...ranged. I was not so sure about myself being solo without at least a brief ride-a-long at first, but again as Ron has told me, figuring this stuff out on my own is part of the evolution. I did ask an instructor to ride with the 1st session on full course to make sure I did not have glaring errors I needed to iron out. I don't have much full course experience. I feel good seeing how I've improved as a driver thanks to the club and members who have helped outside the club. I just need to work on turn 1, turn 2, turn 3, turn 4, turn 5....yeah.

Yeah, it was a great event. I was initially a little torqued that I was once again put in their intermediate group, after having been signed off very early in their last 3 events and being asked by the instructors why I wasn't in experienced, BUT, it was fine. Lots of open track, good point bys. I think after running with these guys a few times they now understand that a little british car with a supercharger can at least hang with an old 911!

Actually had great class room instruction, can't remember the guys name but he was good.

I really enjoyed the better turn in my new camber plates brought and Hoosiers are my new drug of choice.

Full course was a blast with all that open track. And, yes Stacy, I will be at the AV event in December.

One of my best weekends this year! The rrroadster Mk I ran great.

I broke in my brake upgrade this weekend. It did have quite a bit too much rear bias initially - Wilwood forged Dynalites on 11" vented rotors up front, '91 RX-7 turbo rear calipers on 11" vented rotors in back. Hawk HT-10 pads on both ends.

After trying to just drive what I had, I gave up after blowing through Bitch's run off area at ~75 mph on Sunday a.m. Went to the CDOC store. No Wilwood pads, but they did have Hawk HP+'s for the rear RX-7 calipers. Problem solved! No more happy a$$ in aggressive, high speed braking.

I wasn't familiar enough with South course to really know what improvements the brake upgrades provided. Once I got on Full course, the story was told. They let me go in 1 marker deeper on T1. A lot more deeper going into Roller Coaster (Marker 1 conservatively). There's room to compact the braking zones even more once I get more accustomed to the modulation requirements of the new system.

We lost a Boxster on Sunday afternoon and an E30 325 on Monday to South Bend. Both cars hit the track left tire wall at the bottom of the hill pretty hard. Both had collapsed suspension with seriously crumpled panels and had to be rolled on their trailers by the tow truck. That guy can drive! We also had a Boxster on top of the tires at the exit of Bitch on Saturday. Totally off the ground. Once he was dismounted from the pile, he drove away with only superficial scratches. He buffed them out and completed the weekend with no more incidents.

Hanging out with all the THSCCers was fun as usual. Some new acquaintences were also made. The White group at this event was not the quickest I've run with, but on track etiquette was great. I almost always got an acknowledgement wave when I got behind anyone. Passing was usually pretty good. Remchak was hard to keep up with. Mitch doesn't like me following him. Jason gives great point! :) Matthew looked good in his new RX-8 on Azenis. I'll be posting video in the next day or so.

Yep, great videos, Matt! I like the "bumper cam"!

You know I find it amazing that when we go run with other groups, just how fast the THSCC contingent is!!! Kevin and Steve....fuhgettabout'em, they're gone. If Matthew had sticky tires, he'd be right with 'em too! And Cline owned blue group on his Hoosiers!! A fun weekend on track, and just as enjoyable in the paddock with the usual suspects.

See you at CMP.

Finally got some video up on Youtube.

This one's trying to keep up with Steve on South Course. I had just changed rear brake pads to tune out the excessive rear bias and was still getting accustomed to it, but that's no excuse. Steve's fast in his Bimmer! After watching the film a little closer, I think he slowed up a few times to let me catch up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9AYKs6QjAQ

This one's were I was following Matthew on the lap before the one he posted. It was unplanned so he kept trying to give me points. The following laps were spent experimenting with a lot of different stuff after I overtook Matthew. I was playing with left foot trail braking into T3 & Oak Tree. I was also playing with the "James Clay" line through the Climbing Esses. The first time through South Bend I tried entering the turn a little deeper as I had always felt I turned in a little too early - not! I was also trying a line through T5A & 5B Mitch Moore had mentioned. The idea was to set the steering wheel for a single arc through the whole 5A/5B sequence. This wasn't the best looking driving I've done. I haven't checked Traqmate yet to see what was what.
