Hey gang. Thought I would share some video from our event this past week. This is from the Wednesday TT session. Thursday produced a better lap, but unfortunately the jump in the uphill esses cut the camera off on the first good lap... :(

Wed: http://www.project-seven.goof.com/video ... ull508.wmv

Anybody else got some video to share?

What kind of transmission is that? Are my eyes deceiving me or are you "bump" shifting?

Nice vid, btw.

It is a seqential transmission that is part of the bike engine. Upshifts are of the clutchless "lift and shift" variety and downshifts get a dip of the clutch to unload the gears going that direction. It is highly addictive and I dread the thought of going back to an H-pattern in the future. :)

Man - I love the raw mechanical sounds of that beast 8)

Did you sort out something with the setup? It looks considerably less evil than the last video I watched.

Thanks.

And, yes, it is an ongoing process. It seems to get better each time...except that one time when the axle housing that I just installed was bent and I did not realize it for a couple of weekends...

It is pretty decent now, with a bit of understeer until the tires heat up and pretty neutral after that. It still requires a good bit of respect getting on the power at the limit. The parts where it it a bit loose are in pavement transitions or bumpy sections.

I am concerned that the gear whine noise is coming from the ring and pinion not being setup properly. I have to check that before the next event. At least I hope that is the problem...that sound coming from the transmission would probably not be good...

Thanks for the info on the transmission setup, Jeff. I should have picked that up from your website, but it just didn't stick in my head when I read through the engine page.

I am not sure how quiet an R1 engine and tranny are in stock form, but I can say that my 91 Kawasaki Zephyr 750 is one noisy SOB at any speed, LOL. At idle, the engine sounds like it is going to throw a rod and at speed there is a definite whine that is almost audible over the Kerker 4-into-1. Been that way since it was new in Okinawa, haha!

Nice project, I need to wander over and get a close up look at it one of these days at the track.

You know that a Honda would solve all of your problems.

Jeff have you ever tried the straight on approach to 14 and 14a? Instead of bending the car left at the top of 14 rather apex as usual but draw a straight line from that apex to the curbing on the right at the top of 14A. Apex 14a VERY early letting the car sweep track left about2/3 of the way down the hill. Not terribly different then you do now.

The rest is as you drive it: set the left tires in the seam between the track and the gators and fly.

I think you will find that if you take the above approach you can leave your braking for 14 even later and brake less. You have to be RIGHT on for your approach to 14a. An error to one side or the other makes this,. a, busy!

Even though you are approaching turn in for 14a from full track right I think you will find you give up little over the approach you are taking. AND you will gain so much from the straight approach that even if you loose a little in 14a (and I'm not convinced you will) you still net an overall gain.

If you haven't yet give it a try!

Ron

Funny you should bring that up, Ron.

Mike Skeen asked for a ride in the car on Thursday, and of course, I asked him for some feedback afterwards. He was encouraging the same thing. I went for a ride with him the next session and he sold it to me then.

I tried the line for the TT on Thursday...where I did not get video...and I liked it. I was braking probably a half a marker later (even though there are no markers left when I start braking) and still felt like there was room to go even later by a little. The best part was that I was getting down the hill just as fast and hitting the rev limit in practically the same spot.

I am not sure why I have been adverse to taking that line (I have seen people doing it some). I guess it was just too easy to get the car to brake and bend that corner to give it much thought. Pretty sure I could not brake and turn so easily in a properly setup Civic though...

That has to be one of the best "light bulb" moments that I have had in a good long while. It also proves that there is always something new to learn.

Jeff EXCELLENT that you were willing to try a different line.

In class room I run into this all the time: we talk a different line. I tell student's that they must ask (well, I say should) their instructors if they can try that line. Many times they tell me the instructor says something along the lines of "Hmm, that worked very well...." which tells me the instructors were not aware of that line!

While we have the chance in class room to talk different lines with students we don't have that same opportunity with instructors which is a real shame. For VIR full there are at least 3 places where there are significantly different approaches to the corner. But I'm betting most instructors aren't aware of all of them. Too bad as many work (maybe all of them!) regardless of the type and horsepower of the car. Perhaps I need to approach Brad and Mark and Stacy and see if we can set aside a half hour or so for an instructor "class room" session to share different lines and approaches that work. Either on the track or with students. I think it would be HIGHLY beneficial and interesting.

On the other hand I might want to keep these variations secret so I can continue to beat my competition in the time trials!
