apparently much has changed since i moved north in '93. back in the day, Daytona sat empty for a large portion of the year. as usual, i defer to those more knowledgeable.
I'm not sure how you'd know something was going on there during the week even now unless you were out of a vehicle close enough by to hear stuff running or something. When you're there during the week driving by you'd swear nothing was going on, but go through the tunnel and the world opens up. They can fit so much inside the track that there's really no evidence from outside that much is going on.
I found that out when I did my Skip Barber school there back in 2003. We used that infield road course for three days and all three days there were truck teams testing on the oval. We left for lunch and I remember as we returned thinking the place looked dead from the outside, but from the inside it was a whole different story....

honestly Donnie, i never paid much attention to the track other than during advertised events. but since the Daytona area really only had three real tourist attractions as best i could tell, i pretty much figured if the town was slow the track was empty.
as i was slinging pizza in those days, my focus was rather self-centered to say the least.
of course when i lived there nascar was still somewhat entertaining. not to mention they had not yet become the evil empire they are today.
seems to me there was a 12 hour race in July called the Paul Revere something or another in 1984. i believe that was the last year for that race.
unfortunately a large portion of the time i spent in Daytona and the surrounding towns is sort of foggy. but i can name at least three titty bars of lore.
