The Camaro has been loaded in the trailer for the past week. One stop at Performance Alignment Friday morning and off to Carolina Motorsports Park we go.

It is going to be a wild shoot out in the Camaro-Mustang Challenge. There are 17 cars entered for the weekend. Honestly, I think their are 8 of us who can win, especially if we are grouped together in our own run group.

With that many competitive and equally prepared cars, qualifying is going to be key and that has been a weak point in my rookie season. I have spent a lot of mental energy trying to refocus on qualifying and get that issue resolved. I need to replicate my race laps from 3 weeks ago and then some. I was able to consistently turn 1:51's. With the new configuration knocking 3-4 seconds off the old track record, that put me at or below the track record. There is still more to be gained. I would not be surprised to see low 1:50 or 1:49

The car is ready. After it's back to back race weekends in April, it needed the front calipers replaced and new brake pads. As a reward for Barney, he got a new B&M Ripper shifter installed. No more sloppy stock shifter.

I will be on RA1's that have three previous weekends on them. But most everyone else will be running used or slightly used RA1's. With Hyperfest coming up in June, people are saving the new tires for that weekend. That is the race everyone wants to win.

The goals for this weekend are simple, to bring the Camaro and myself home in one piece, get into the 1:50's for qualifying and finish in the top 4. A podium finish would be awesome and a first win....anything can happen.

A very brief recap. Great weather, finally. I qualified second on Saturday and fought Kent Lydic for 30 minutes for second place. I had to settle for third as I lost brakes on the white flag a lap. We exchanged position a half dozen times during the race. But at the end, it was better to get third than nothing at all. Mike Morris cruised to the win on Saturday, enjoying the side by side battle behind him.

Sunday the brake issue continued to haunt me. I cut practice and qualifying short with only three qualifying laps. I managed to qualify fourth. Lets put it this way, I have had better first laps in a race. I hit Lydic 3 times before we completed one lap. After the first lap, I found myself in 5th. I worked my way to 4th and had a 6-7 lap battle for third. It was mine, until the motor shutdown with 1.5 laps to go.

After letting it cool down, we got it running back in the pits. What is wrong with it, I have no clue. But I have 5 weeks to figure it out.

All in all, a good weekend. There is minimal damage to the car, some missing paint on the front fascia. I ran 1:50:1 all day, but failed to get into the 49's (with fresh tires it would be no problem). I got to the podium.

I will have video to post later. It was fun watching the videos Saturday night from Kent's camera and then mine. Pretty cool projecting it on the side of a toter. Big Screen!

The video from Saturday's race. I could get used to the view from the front row. The side-by-side racing starts at about the 6:45 mark of the video.

Great vid, Jim. Good race. I love seeing a Mustang and Camaro go at it and being very evenly matched.
