Here's a good example of what not to do (trying to save it) in T10. When it gets to 19 sec mark, click pause then click-click pause/play for the next 2 seconds. Notice the steering wheel input as the car pushes out to the gators...don't ever carry input like that into gators anywhere. Open up that wheel well before you get to the gators to take the slip angle out of the rear tires too so you can cleanly drive off the outside. Derek later said he was VERY happy to have been wearing a HANS device.

IMO he was late from the onset. he hit 7 and missed everything else after that causing his early turn in on south bend.

i can't tell Chuck, did he go off track right at the apex and then paste the left wall or did he crest the hill and shoot straight into the left side tire wall?

It looks to me like he was early with too much speed, the car was plowing with a lot of steering lock dialed in, and he just held that condition right into the outside gators on the outside edge. It seems like there's this long (relatively) time when he's clearly headed into those gators and that steering lock is just held constant right into them.

+1

looks to me like he just tried to carry too much speed through south bend and never opened the wheel at the exit (until it was too late)....

he seemed fine all the way through the esses except maybe the last right hander were he was a little bit off the apex, not a huge deal though and he got the car back over close to where it needed to be for the entry to south bend...probably just needed to scrub off some more speed before turning in to south bend...

Turn in point looked good to me. He was just too fast and the rear got away from him on the exit. You *DO* have to slow for South Bend. Not alot, but you have to slow some...

The video never quite gives enough information, but I'd say that the turn in looked OK to me, but he was HOT.
Had I been in the right seat the dialog would have progressed like this:
At turn in: "Holy Crap!", then out load "Easy, easy"
At the apex: "Open the wheel......Drive Off Straight....Drive Off Straight...repeat, repeat

When he got to the gator with that much steering input it was pretty much over. At ludicrous speed I have driven the gators with maybe 5 degrees of wheel input but that starts getting scary. When the car has that much rotation dialed in, if the outside rear wheel touches the dirt it is pretty much a carnival ride from then on.

Finally watched the video and Charlie is right. WAY too much steering input as he hit the gators track right. He could have made it if he opened the wheel at trackout and just went 2 off. I've done it (last time trial!) and while its not pretty its doable.

Yeah, I don't see where you guys get that he was "plowing" or even pushing at all. No way to tell from the video. It looked to me like he probably just wicked it up a hair too much from his last time through and as said, still had the steering input in when he hit the gators. I agree with Ron that if he had opened it up just before the gator he would have probably dropped two off and been fine. My guess is he had some slip angle in the car (probably just the right amount if the track had been a few feet wider, which simply means he was going just a hair too fast) and when the rear impacted the gator he lost all rear grip. Wheeee!

And this is from someone who fucked T10 royally once in an SM and hit that outside tire wall with some serious force. I did a full 180 and hit passenger side in so hard it broke my motor mount on one side and I cracked my helmet out the back. No HANS back then and was missing one apparently crucial piece of roll bar padding. Had a headache for two days, but no other ill effects. Eric claims I called him on my way home, but there's no way that could have happened since I don't remember it.

I've since been off big one time at T10, but that was thanks to another driver and we simply went "plowing" in the field. No damage other than track position. I've been two wheels off several times out there.

I should have the Cayman out there in One Lap trim (except the CF doors) on Monday and Tuesday with Trackdaze. Then off to CMP with it on Friday.

while my interpretation may be way off, i assumed you would be at CMP the weekend of 03-07/08/09. Stacy has a lapping day on the tenth.

seriously, CF doors on the Cayman?

Oh! My brain was stuck on VIR. No, not hanging around for that. Just there for the member day to get some one-on-one instruction from Brian Smith. Got Don Knowles working with me both days at VIR, too.

They're just skins with latch and hinges, no windows or anything. Hoping to be able to haul them on the tire trailer during the One Lap and just put them on for track duty. Should shave 150 pounds total. Legal for SM2, too. :)

I got a CF rear deck lid with lexan window, too. That saved a bunch of weight as well.

This is getting you a little excited, isn't it Steve. Caymen with CF bits would really impress some of your Porsche,Porsche buddies. Got to admit I think I might likey too!
