Just saw this on a Focus board, regarding Spec Focus rules next year. Haven't looked at all the devices, but the Leatt brace can be had for less than $400.

Edit - that price is for the Moto-GPX (bikes) - haven't found anyone in the US with the Moto-R (auto)

Quote:
H&N restraint with SFI 38.1 cert required as of June 2, 2008

Specification 38.1 - Head and Neck Restraint Systems

Hubbard-Downing HANS Device
Leatt Brace Moto-R Sport Device
LFT Technologies R3 Device
Safety Solutions Hutch-II Device
Safety Solutions Hutchens Hybrid Device
Safety Solutions Hybrid X Device

Not looking to start a debate on which ones better or why some devices aren't included - just being the messenger.

As an FYI (no affiliations, etc) - HANS apparently has a new model that just came out in the last week or so that is around $700 vs. the $900 regular models. Main difference is that the new model is a pound or so heavier and carries an SFI, but not FIA certification. So, to save $200, you're giving up your opportunity to use it in an F1 car.

I had been looking at the Leatt pretty hard earlier in the year until I recieved this correspondance from them.

"With regards to using the Leatt-Brace™ MOTO R with 3 pnt harnesses we don’t recommend it.

Regards
Karl Ebel
Marketing
Leatt Corporation Inc."

I believe I read something on the specmiata.com leading me to believe HANS has cut their prices down to $650ish for a base model.

The HANS leaves room for a little play in the chest restraint for me, so I don't consider them to be a good fitment for myself.

The R3 fit me very well and I like the fact that it works indepentant of harnesses. Hopefully they will introduce a reduction in pricing to keep up with the HANS.

Lots of people were very excited about the Leatte Brace (even me) but in reality, none of the people I've heard who've ordered one has taken delivery of it (some over a year ago).

I personally think its a shame that SFI 38.1 is so stringent on the single point of release mechanism. I plan on using the Isaacs when I can afford it since don't plan on doing any wheel-to-wheel.

Here's some more info on everything H&N:

Just a little follow up, NASA has mandated all racers must have a SFI 38.1 HNR by June 2008.

BOO!!!

Lots of unhappy Isaac owners out there now. Kind of stinks when the device with the best performance in crash testing gets excluded...

There is a composite R3 model available now for $695. I believe that's the direction I will be going in.

Hmmm. I might start watching the NASA forum for sale section. Might be a lot of slightly used Isaacs going cheap before summer...
